New York, NY – June 27, 2012 – Kino Classics is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Last of England (1987), Derek Jarman’s powerful and apocalyptic vision of the future of England as told through the deeply personal lens of his rage toward Thatcher-era conservatism in his home country, which Katherine Dieckmann in The Village Voice praised as “Wrenchingly beautiful… one of the few commanding works of personal cinema in the late ’80s.”
The Last of England will become available to the general public on Blu-ray and DVD on July 24th. The SRP for the Blu-ray is $29.95, and the SRP for the DVD is $24.95. It is currently available for prebook.
Derek Jarman’s (Sebastiane) film depicts his rage at the conservatism of Thatcher-era England, and is haunted by the continuing scourge of AIDS (with which Jarman was diagnosed).
Through this conflicted lens, Jarman explores his country’s past and presents a vision of its future.
Oscar® winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) roams through the ruins of industrial England, where she experiences visions of fascistic terror. Her nightmares are woven between clips from Jarman’s old home movies, and contain quotes from such poets as T.S. Eliot and Allen Ginsberg, read by Nigel Terry (Excalibur).
The home movies provide a link with England’s past that is in a state of transition, soon to be severed altogether, offering a haunting examination of his home country.
The Last of England is both deeply personal and grimly historical, and remains one of the most important British films of all time.
