Turner Classic Movies and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Bring Five Classic Film Noir Thrillers to DVD for First Time Ever |
January 19, 2012 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment
Shadowy streets, tough guys and dangerous women take center stage in an all-new collection of five classic film noir thrillers available now on DVD for the first time ever from Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE).
Presented in collaboration with The Film Foundation, the multi-disc Film Noir Classics III collection is the third volume of film noir titles from Columbia Pictures. The set includes Nina Foch and George Macready in My Name is Julia Ross (1945), Mickey Rooney and Dianne Foster in Drive a Crooked Road (1955), Broderick Crawford in The Mob (1951), Ginger Rogers and Edward G. Robinson in Tight Spot (1955) and Dan Duryea and Jayne Mansfield in The Burglar (1957), with introductions by Martin Scorsese, founder and chair of the non-profit preservation group, The Film Foundation.
Film Noir Classics III is being released as part of the TCM Vault Collection. All five films in the set have been digitally remastered and feature extensive on-screen bonus materials, including theatrical trailers, photos, posters, lobby cards and more. TCM Vault Collection sets are presented in beautiful gatefold packaging. They are available exclusively through TCMs online store at http://shop.tcm.com, which also offers the previous two sets of Columbia Pictures’ film noir classics, released with The Film Foundation as part of the Collectors Choice series.
The following are the five films included in Film Noir Classics III:
My Name is Julia Ross (1945) A mixture of film noir and gothic fiction elements, this London-set thriller stars Nina Foch as a young woman who answers an employment ad, only to become the prisoner of a strange family. George Macready and Dame May Whitty co-star in this first in a series of low-budget film noirs directed by Joseph H. Lewis. It is based on the novel The Woman in Red by Anthony Gilbert, which also served as the basis for Arthur Penn 1987 thriller Dead of Winter.
Drive a Crooked Road (1955) Mickey Rooney, Dianne Foster, Kevin McCarthy and Jack Kelly star in this tough crime story directed by Richard Quine from a script he wrote with Blake Edwards. Rooney plays a racecar driver hired by two bank robbers to help with their latest heist. Foster is the femme fatale who ropes him into the scheme.
The Mob (1951) Broderick Crawford plays a hard-nosed cop who infiltrates the mob in order to stop their dockyard rackets. Directed by Robert Parrish and based on a novel Waterfront by Ferguson Findley, this sharp drama also features Betty Buehler, Richard Kiley and, in an un-credited role as a longshoreman, a young Charles Bronson.
Tight Spot (1955) Ginger Rogers gives one of the best performances of her career as a potential government witness held for her own protection–against her will–until the trial begins against a gangster acquaintance.\. Edward G. Robinson plays the U.S. attorney who makes the deal with her in this exceptional film noir directed by Phil Karlson. William Bowers adapted the screenplay from Leonard Kantor’s play Dead Pigeon, which itself was inspired by Senator Estes Kefauver’s attempts to coerce Virginia Hill into testifying against her lover, Bugsy Siegel.
The Burglar (1957) Based on a pulp fiction novel by David Goodis, this crisp noir tale stars Dan Duryea as a cunning jewel thief who recruits Jayne Mansfield, Mickey Shaughnessy and Peter Capell for one final heist before retiring. The Burglar was shot on location in Atlantic City and Philadelphia by first-time director Paul Wendkos, who also served as editor on the film.

New York, NY – December 29, 2011 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the DVD release of Philippe Mora’s film, Swastika (1973), a highly controversial documentary about Adolf Hitler that The Washington Post called “the most potent of anti-Nazi films.”

Met with a tumultuous reception at Cannes in 1973, Swastika was subsequently banned in Germany until 2010, when it was acknowledged for its significant contribution to understanding Hitler and Nazism; as stated in its opening credits, “If Hitler is dehumanized and shown only as a devil, any future Hitler may not be recognized, simply because he is a human being.”

However, rather than finding themselves dead, they were transported to a strange apartment in which they found a mysterious black orb known as ‘GANTZ’. Along with others there, they were given weaponry sent on missions to battle alien beings and gain “points.”
How will we face the end? The GANTZ saga meets its ultimate conclusion in GANTZ II: Perfect Answer, which offers an intensely gripping story-line yet to be known to even readers of the original manga series. Determined to resurrect his friends who have died on previous missions, Kei and other members trapped in the world of GANTZ aim to score the 100 points needed to break through and regain their freedom. But with the emergence of a mysterious man investigating the Gantz members, Gantz begins to act up and the next target shocks the members. Some fight for love, some for justice but what will each member sacrifice?
Kazunari Ninomiya, best known in America for his role in Clint Eastwood’s 2006 blockbuster, Letters from Iwo Jima, is both an actor and a singer. He is also world-renowned as a member of the Japanese boy band “Arashi,” which topped Japan’s music charts in 2009 with the three best-selling singles.
Kenichi Matsuyama is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Japanese film and he has won several awards including Japanese Academy Awards Best New Actor (2007) and Most Popular Actor (2009). Matsuyama is widely recognized for his part as L in Death Note (2006), Death Note II: the Last Name (2006) and Death Note: L, change the WorLd (2008) and also for his portrayal of Johannes Krauser II in the outlandish rock and roll comedy, Detroit Metal City (2009).

Kino Lorber Releases Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2011) on Blu-ray and DVD |
December 9, 2011 by J!-ENT · Leave a Comment
New York, NY – December 9, 2011 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Film Socialisme, a cinematic essay on Western civilization, politics and history presented through the lens of master filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.
Film Socialisme comes to Blu-ray and DVD with special features including trailers, a stills gallery, and a special essay about the film by Richard Brody, author of Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard, which puts the film in the context of Godard’s career. This edition is presented in its original multi-language soundtrack, with two subtitle options including Godard’s “Navajo” English from the theatrical version, and a full English translation of all of the film’s dialog. The prebook date for the Blu-ray and DVD is December 13, 2011, and the street date for each is January 10, 2012. The SRP for the Blu-ray is $34.95, while the SRP for the DVD is $29.95.
This “remarkable and beautiful and challenging” (Glenn Kenny, MSN) essay from filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard explores contemporary European politics and culture in three distinct parts. The first is set on a luxury cruise liner sailing the Mediterranean (with Patti Smith among its passengers), on which Godard examines the garishness of its wealthy passengers with the rich and troubled history of the ship’s ports of call.
The second part depicts the tension between the owners of a rural French rest stop, running for local office, and their children, who have their own ideas about the future. The third part is part-travelogue, part-history lesson, and part-essay, as Godard explores Western history at six different ports of call: Egypt, Hellas, Palestine, Odessa, Naples, and Barcelona, depicting images of art and conflict in order to examine the past and the future of Western civilization.
Shot in HD (Godard’s first film shot entirely in that format), Film Socialisme is a cinematic essay on the socio-political crises of our times.

New York, NY – December 5, 2011 – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Rapt (2011), a suspense drama by Lucas Belvaux that Andrew O’Hehir in Salon.com called a “cool and ingenious thriller”.
The film comes to Blu-ray and DVD with special features including trailers and a stills gallery. The SRP for the Blu-ray is $34.95, and the SRP for the DVD is $29.95. Both are available on December 6, 2011.
Starring Yvan Attal as wealthy industrialist Stanislas Graff, director Lucas Belvaux tells the intense, thrilling story of Graff’s kidnapping in a daring daylight operation. He’s held for 50 million Euros, which his family is desperate to pay, but his multi-national company has their own agenda, concerned more with their own public image and financial interests.
But that’s only the beginning of Graff’s ordeal. In the process of trying to locate the funds to pay his ransom, the unflattering details of Graff’s private life come under public scrutiny, from his gambling, to infidelity, and worse. As his business associates become less and less invested in securing his release, Graff remains in harrowing and excruciating captivity. However, with the details of his private life that have emerged, Graff begins to realize that his eventual release may not mean a return to his old life.
Resonating powerfully with contemporary economic and political realities, Rapt (2011) is both a taut thriller and a character study into a man whose public image belies his unsavory private life.

Girl$ follows four young women and their experiences in the world of “compensated dating”, where the girls are paid to date and not necessarily have sex. Of course, sex is an inevitable byproduct of the business, and the girls are subject to the same dangers: diseases, perverted clients, and even a killer who’s out there killing and dismembering the working girls. Nonetheless, the girls forge on because they need to pay the bills and make a living.
Director Kenneth Bi delivers a stylish, energetic and entertaining film.
FUNimation Entertainment will release the DVD in fall 2012.
