HYPERION TO PUBLISH INSPIRING MEMOIR ON A FAMILY’S UNIQUE WAY OF DEALING WITH A FATHER’S DEPLOYMENT

July 17, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Book Will Redefine Family Dinners
New York City, July 16, 2012 – Hyperion today announced plans to publish an inspiring book by the U.S. Navy’s only military spouse blogger, Sarah Smiley.  Described by the New York Times as “Erma Bombeck for the military wife set,” Sarah will write a true, heart-warming tale about the family dinner table, and how she filled her deployed husband’s seat with guests once a week for thirteen months. Sarah gives readers a powerful message about how we fill the gaps in our lives when loved ones are far away.  The book, entitled DINNER WITH THE SMILEYS, was acquired in a preempt and is scheduled for publication in Summer 2013.
While Navy pilot Lt. Cmdr. Dustin Smiley is deployed to Djibouti for 1 year, Sarah, his wife, and her 3 children-Ford, 11, Owen, 9, and Lindell, 5-host one special guest each week to fill his seat at the dinner table at their home in Bangor, Maine. The idea for the dinners began when Ford told his mom that family dinners wouldn’t be the same without his dad. The weekly dinners were intended to be a way to pass the lonely nights of a year-long family separation, but to the Smileys’ surprise, the guests ended up contributing to all of their lives in a much deeper way.
Maine’s own Senator Susan Collins kicked off the dinners on January 3rd.  The surprise guest for the 53rd dinner will be Dustin Smiley. Some other guests have included school teachers, a Congressman, an Olympic gold medalist, players from the Boston Red Sox, famous authors, and R2-D2.   In just one year’s time, while the Smiley boys will have missed their father at birthday parties, baseball games, and school plays, they also will have gained a community, a unique education, and 52 mentors.
Sarah’s eponymous weekly columns, which often mention Dinner with the Smileys, reach more than 2 million people across the country.  Her updates, photos, and videos are regularly shared by 4 million people through the U.S. Navy’s official blog.
The announcement of the new book was made by Executive Editor of Hyperion, Kerri Kolen.  Of the pre-empt, Kolen said, “The concept of dinner with the Smileys is fun and unique but the takeaway has been so unexpected in that the Smiley boys have learned such profound lessons from their guests.  This book shows us that a community of family, friends, and neighbors is still very much part of the American lifestyle.”
Kolen acquired North American and audio rights from Cheryl Pientka of Jill Grinberg Literary Management.
Hyperion, founded in 1991, publishes general-interest fiction and nonfiction hardcover, trade, and mass-market paperback books for adults, and includes the Voice and Hyperion eBook and Audio imprints. Bleach: The Official Character Book 2 (a J!-ENT Book Review)

March 13, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Full of detailed information for a wonderful price, if you are a fan of Tite Kubo’s “Bleach”, “Bleach: The Official Character Book 2” is a wonderful resource guide and reference. Definitely recommended!

TITLE: Bleach: The Official Character Book 2

BY: Tite Kubo

PUBLISHER: Viz Media

PAGE COUNT: 273

RELEASED: March 6, 2012

Uncover the secrets of Bleach! This profile book contains extensive information on the characters and story from Bleach volumes 21-37. It includes exclusive color art, a poster, bonus materials and an interview with Tite Kubo. Step into the ghostly world of Bleach like never before!

“Bleach”, is currently of the most successful Japanese animation and manga series in Japan.  It’s popularity reaches worldwide and since 2001, many fans have clamored for it’s action-based storyline featured on television, manga series, films and video games.

And it’s all thanks to series creator, writer and illustrator Noriaki “Tite” Kubo.

For those who have watched this series since the very beginning, they have watched the amount of characters grow from five characters to a number that I have no idea how many there are at this point.  And aside from the characters, they also have incredible attacks and abilities that they are mentioned so much during the series, fans may easily have remembered them but to tell you the truth, there are so many, it’s hard to keep in track unless you are a dedicated hardcore fan.

But fear not, in 2008, Viz Media released “Bleach: The Official Character Book” which not only gave information and trivia regarding its characters, fans also got to read a summary of what had taken place in the series so far.

Since 2008, there have been an explosion in terms of how many characters were featured on the manga and anime series.

And so, it is time once again for a new “Bleach: The Official Character Book 2” as many soul reapers and antagonists such as the Arrancars and characters such as the Visoreds have been featured on the anime and manga series as well as their special abilities.  Things are becoming a bit more difficult to keep in track, so for many fans, the release of this book will be a blessing.

Here is what is featured in “Bleach: The Official Character Book 2”:

  • Weekly Jump Covers
  • Bonus Poster
  • Chapter 1: World of the Living Character Correlation and Diagram Index and World of the Living Character Profiles
  • Chapter 2: Detailed Explanation of Soul Reapers, Soul Reaper Character Correlation Diagram & Index, Soul Reaper Character Profiles
  • Chapter 3: Detailed Explanation of Arrancars, Arrancar Character Correlation Diagram & Index, Arrancar Character Profiles
  • Chapter 4: Visored Character Correlation Diagram and Index, Detailed Explanation of the Visored, Visored Character Profiles
  • Chapter 4B: Turn back the Pendulum, Comprehensive Thirteen Court Guard Companies Chart
  • Chapter 5: Historical Facts, Terms Explanation Vol. 2, Tite Kubo Interview, Extra Scene, The Next Beginning, Postscript
  • Chapter Kon: Kon Introduction, Kon Column #1-#3

Full of detailed information for a wonderful price, if you are a fan of Tite Kubo’s “Bleach”, “Bleach: The Official Character Book 2” is a wonderful resource guide and reference.

The character profiles for this second volume showcase profile data of a character, their Zanpaku-to (a special ability that the user and their sword can unleash).  There are humor for example Tite Kubo’s reference to Rangiku’s “watermelons” and there are experienced events (brief summaries) that were featured in the series in regard to that character.

For me, my confusion has always been in regards to the Arrancar and Visoreds.  There are so many of them and it’s got to the point where I am confused.  So, I was happy that we have the character references to each of these new characters that were featured.

It’s important to note that if you owned the first book, you definitely want to keep it as the antagonists from the earlier storyline are featured in that book.  Also, the first book goes into detailed information about Karakura and the structure of the Soul Society.

In short, for anyone who wants to “Bleach” experience and wants to know every detail of every featured character up to the Arrancar/Visored storyline will want to own this book.

Highly recommended for “Bleach” fans!

HYPERION TO PUBLISH THREE ORIGINAL EBOOKS IN BESTSELLING NOVELIST RICHARD CASTLE’S ACCLAIMED DERRICK STORM SERIES

February 21, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

New York City, February 20, 2012 – Hyperion today announced plans to publish three original eBook novellas by renown mystery writer Richard Castle, marking a return to his internationally bestselling and award-winning Derrick Storm series. The first eBook, titled A Brewing Storm, will be published in May 2012 and will bring the former CIA operative out of retirement. The as-yet-untitled second and third Derrick Storm eBooks are scheduled for release in July and August respectively.
Castle, whose eponymous hit television show “Castle” airs on ABC Monday nights at 10 PM, is also the author most recently of the bestselling Nikki Heat novels, based on his ride-alongs with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett with whom he solves crimes and trades barbs. The latest thriller, Heat Rises, debuted at #1 on The New York Times hardcover fiction bestsellers list in October 2011.
Mr. Castle said of the eBook deal, “While consulting with the NYPD on a recent case, I was inspired to re-examine the circumstances around the death of my beloved character Derrick Storm. It turns out, there was much more to the story than met the eye. I’m excited to be working with Hyperion to bring Derrick Storm fans a brand new adventure of mystery, action and intrigue.”
The announcement of the new eBooks was made by Ellen Archer, President and Publisher of Hyperion. Of the deal, Archer said, “Acquiring new stories in Richard Castle’s Derrick Storm series is a proud moment for all of us at Hyperion. Gretchen Young, VP Editorial Director for ABC Synergy, negotiated the deal. Young is Richard Castle’s longtime editor of the Nikki Heat series. Hyperion retains World and eBook rights.
“Castle” premiered on ABC in March of 2009, featuring bestselling mystery novelist Richard Castle. In that debut season, the charming and charismatic Castle, (portrayed by actor Nathan Fillion) was paired for research ride-alongs with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (portrayed by actress Stana Katic), and with her found the inspiration for his fictional detective Nikki Heat, the intriguing main character of his next series. During the second season, Castle opted for a three-book deal to continue the Nikki Heat series over an offer to write three books in a not-to-be-named internationally bestselling spy series. The third season ended with a cliffhanger, which is reflected in Heat Rises. One thing is for sure-the smoldering chemistry between Beckett and Castle continues to sizzle in the precinct throughout the fourth season. Richard Castle currently lives in Manhattan with his daughter and mother, both of whom infuse his life with humor and inspiration. Follow Richard Castle via Twitter at www.twitter.com/WriteRCastle.

“TEN BILLION DAYS AND ONE HUNDRED BILLION NIGHTS won the title of the greatest Japanese science fiction title ever written in a 2006 poll by Science Fiction magazine,” says Nick Mamatas, Haikasoru’s Editor. “The novel, which comes with a striking glow-in-the-dark dust jacket, delivers a cosmic adventure in the style of Arthur C. Clarke, covering the evolution of humanity, the lives of some of history’s most iconic religious figures, a future techno-dystopia, and the very death of the universe itself. Originally published in 1967, author Ryu Mitsuse revised the novel in later years and republished it in 1973. We’re truly honored to finally release this masterpiece to North American readers.”

Born in Tokyo in 1928, Ryu Mitsuse graduated from Tokyo University of Education with a degree in the sciences, after which he took up the study of philosophy. He debuted with “Sunny Sea 1979” in 1962, and his work—which often combines Eastern philosophy and hard science fiction—includes Tasogare ni kaeru (Returns in the Twilight) and Ushinawareta toshi no kiroku (The Chronicle of a Lost City). Mitsuse made SF history when his short story “The Sunset, 2217 A.D.” was translated into English for inclusion in Best Science Fiction for 1972. With artist Keiko Takemiya, he created the manga Andromeda Stories. Ryu Mitsuse died in 1999.
