Through a strange quirk of fate, this typical junior high school student finds herself in possession of a mysterious deck of cards from which five magical girls known as the Fantasista Dolls materialize! By playing the cards in different combinations, Uzume can equip the “Sistas” with an amazing variety of costumes and weapons. That’s going to come in extremely handy, as a new danger that only the Dolls can stop is coming to threaten the Earth!
Will Uzume be able to deal with both the Dolls’ odd demands and the fate of mankind resting on her shoulders? Or are the odds hopelessly stacked against her? With the future of everyone she knows and loves riding on her, Uzume’s going to have to learn how to play the hand she’s been dealt pretty quickly, because while she may know when to hold them, folding them isn’t going to be an option with the world at stake!
In 2013, the manga series “Fantasista Doll” featured on “Newtype Ace” and “Comptiq” received an adaptation courtesy of Hoods Entertainment (“BlazBlue Alter Memory”, “The Quaser of Stigmata”, “Mysterious Girlfriend X”).
The series has since led to several manga adaptations, novels and a cell-phone video game.
With the popularity of the Kadokawa Shoten series, “Fantasista Doll” will now be released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.
The series revolves around a young girl named Uzume Uno who has found a mysterious device in her bag. Uzume is not really motivated and despite doing well at collecting cards, she is not interested in joining the high school card club headed by her friend Manai Suzuki.
One day, she begins seeing things and hearing voices in her head. While being stalked and attacked, Uzume is helped by Sasara, who explains that she is a Fantasista Doll and as Uzume is her master, she can call her into the device and give her powers to take on those who are trying to hurt her.
She is attacked by Kagami Todori, who uses her dolls to retrieve Uzume’s cards. But after a brief battle, Sasara is victorious and Kagami retreats and threatens to get Uzume’s cards.
Not knowing what Kagami meant, Sasara explains to Uzume that she is a Fantasista Doll and she is her master. But it is also revealed that Uzume is the master of a total of five Fantasista Dolls.
But as Uzume is unwilling to get into any battles, despite ignoring her dolls at first, Uzume starts to realize that she wants to not only be their friend but to be a respectable master that wants to care for them.
But Uzume is unaware that there are other doll owners out there who want to compete with her and take her cards.
The primary characters of “Fantasista Doll” are:
- Uzume Uno – The protagonist who is trying to get used to being a master of her five Fantasista dolls. A kind-hearted individual.
- Sasara – Uzume’s Fantasista Doll known for her great fighting skills and a master swordsman. She is stubborn and often arguing with Uzume.
- Katia – The youngest of Uzume’s Fantasista Doll who has unconscious luck. She is childish.
- Shimeji – Uzume’s Fantasista Doll who is scared of being abandoned. While sensitive, she has extreme power when pushed over the edge.
- Akari– A gothic lolita wearing Fantasista Doll who often has a tsundere attitude towards Uzume and attacks with her yo-yo’s.
- Madeleine – The oldest of Uzume’s Fantasista dolls that is a great tactician.
- Kagami Todori – Uzume’s rival and a member who is looking for her older brother who had gone missing. She is a doll master that attends the same school as Uzume.
- Manai Suzuki – The president of her school’s card club and Uzume’s childhood friend. She is a doll master.
“Fantasista Doll” is presented in 1080p High Definition. The anime series features cool character designs and a colorful palette. While the series is vibrant, because it is a TV series, there is also a slight hint of softness. It’s important to note that unlike other Sentai Filmwork releases with episodes split up into two discs, “Fantasista Doll” features all episodes on one Blu-ray disc.
AUDIO & SUBTITLES:
“Fantasista Doll” is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. The Japanese soundtrack features good dynamic range despite not having a 5.1 soundtrack. Japanese dialogue is crystal clear and it’s important to note that there is no English dub included on this Blu-ray release.
“Fantasista Doll: Complete Collection” comes with the clean opening and closing themes.
A new spin on card battle anime series, “Fantasista Dolls” is a fascinating anime series about a teenage girl who must take on other doll masters in a competition of card battles, but cards that will transform to human-like fighters with their own set of skills.
With each character having their own style of fighting, what separates “Fantasista Dolls” with other anime series is the fact that these dolls have emotional issues that stem from having been left behind by their previous master. Some who are mistreated by their doll master.
But Uzume being the kind-hearted girl that she is, she wants to bond with each member and earn their trust.
The first half of the series features Uzume trying to win the respect of her Fantasista Dolls but also learning more about each member. Meanwhile, other doll masters are wanting to fight in order to take Uzume’s cards in order to become more powerful. But with Uzume being the kind-hearted, sweet girl that she is, will the danger of being in battle, make her want to quit?
Each episode is a lot of fun and easily accessible for those who want an anime series that is not too deep but is cute, sweet and features a lot of fun characters.
The final two episodes does get a bit emotional but for the most part, the series is lighthearted and definitely is a different take on the card battle series in Japan. No monsters, no demons, just straight up girls with special abilities.
As for the Blu-ray release, I must admit that I was worried because all 12 episodes are featured on one Blu-ray disc, which is different from what Sentai Filmworks was doing before, by putting episodes to fill up two Blu-ray discs. But the animation looks good and I didn’t notice any major artifacts or banding issues due to all episodes being on one disc. There is a bit of softness but that is common for anime TV episodes.
Animation is very well-done and the series features a colorful palette, while Japanese audio is well-acted. It’s important to note that there are no English dubs on this Blu-ray release and special features are non-existent.
Overall, “Fantasista Doll: Complete Collection” is a fun and sweet anime series that features a more creative and fun twist on the card battle genre. An entertaining series from beginning to end, “Fantasista Doll: Complete Collection” is recommended!
