After enrolling at the Constant Magic Academy, Akuto Sai discovers he’s not just a gifted student with magical powers, he’s destined to become the Demon King. Though he’s not that crazy about the idea, it drives the girls wild! From the sexy school girls in his class to the skin-obsessed android who’s programmed to seduce him, Akuto has no shortage of wacky girl trouble. How much temptation can a demon king take?
What would you do if your dreams was to become the high priest and protect the people of your country but to find out that your actual destiny is to become the demon king and the feared destroyer of mankind? This is the story of Akuto Sai who finds out that his dream has been curtailed in the anime series “Demon King Daimao” (Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Mao), an anime series adapted from a Japanese light novel by Shotaro Mizuki (and illustrated by Souichi Ito).
Originally published by Hobby Japan via their HJ Bunk imprint in 2008, the series is still continuing in Japan in Akita Shoten’s magazine “Champion Red” and now the 12-episode anime series will be released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.
“Demon King Daimao” is directed by Takashi Watanabe (“Casshan: Robot Hunter”, “Boogiepop Phantom”, “Lost Universe”), screen composition by Takao Yoshioka (“Elfen Lied”, “Freezing”, “Ikki Tousen”) and music by Tatsuya Katou (“Needless”, “Seikon no Quaser”). The character designs are by Miyabi Ozeki (“11eyes”, “Amagami SS”) and Toshimtsu Kobayashi (“Dance in the Vampire Bund”, “Lupin III” films) with background art by Shinji Kawaai (“Slayers Evolution-R”, “Slayers Revolution”, “Futatsu no Kurumi”).
“Demon King Daimao” revolves around the character of Akuto Sai, an orphan who is transfering to the Constant Magick Academy with dreams of becoming a high priest and protect society. The first friend he meets is Junko Hattori, a member of the Hattori clan, who’s job is to protect the Empire and also wants to make the world a better place.
But things don’t go to well for Akuto as students get their predictions of what work they will do in the future from the school’s oracular spirit, for Akuto, the spirit predicts that his future will be to become the demon king which sends everyone in class in fear. Fearing that there is no way that is true and trying to calm the students down, his friend Junko feels that she was betrayed and lied to and when she goes to attack Akuto, somehow Akuto is able to block her attack and use a ball of energy which accidentally destroys the class.
Now in fear that the prediction may be true, Akuto feels that even though everyone fears him, he wants to use his powers for good and will do all he can to persuade the students at Constant Magick Academy to trust him (meanwhile, other students are planning to assassinate him).
The main characters of “Demon King Daimao” are:
- Akuto Sai – The main protagonist of the series. An orphan who transferred to Constant Magick Academy, his dreams are to become a high priest and help society but when the school’s spirit predicts he will become the demon king, everyone begins to fear him and people conspire to kill him. Meanwhile, Akuto develops power to control magical energy and use his powers for good.
- Junko Hattori – A member of the samurai Hattori clan and a disciple of the god Suhara, Junko is devoted to help people and has a strong sense of justice. When she discovers that Akuto is the demon king, she intends to destroy him and mistakes his good deeds as evil.
- Kena Soga – A classmate of Akuto who wears a mysterious bird-shaped hairpin. What is her mysterious relationship to Akuto?
- Korone – Korone is a Liradan, a race of androids who were sent to to observe Akuto and loves to do perverted things to get him to notice her.
- Hiroshi Miwa – The rival of Akuto. A small boy who has been bullied and looks as Akuto as his protector but also looks at him to be evil and misinterprets Akuto’s actions.
- Fujiko Eto – The head of the Eto family and the head of the girl’s dorms at constant Academy. She is secretly the leader of an underground movement that uses black magic and desperately wants to be the Demon Queen.
“Demon King Daimao” is presented in 1080p High Definition (16×9). Artland did a wonderful job for this anime series. The colors are absolutely vibrant on Blu-ray, there is a good amount of detail on the art backgrounds, good detail, good shading and also wonderful detail for the character designs.
Although a 12-episode series, there is no low quality attention given to each scene as each background doesn’t seem re-used. So, I was quite pleased with the overall animation and art backgrounds for “Demon King Daimao”.
AUDIO & SUBTITLES:
“Demon King Daimo” is presented in Japanese and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. First, let’s talk about the voice acting. I tested both and the voice acting are well-done for the Japanese and English soundtrack.
I actually watched the series in with both languages and for the most part, each are done quite well. So, depending on your preference, whichever you do choose, you should be happy with the acting.
As for the lossless soundtracks, both are 2.0. I wished Sentai Filmworks did rework the sound for the English audio track if they could have but for the most part, dialogue and music is clear through the front channels. Although, I personally found it to be my preference to select stereo on all channels on my receiver for a more immersive soundtrack.
Subtitles are in English.
“Demon King Daimao: Complete Collection” comes with the following special features:
- Production Sketches – Featuring the uncensored production sketches for “Demon King Daimao”.
- Clean Opening Animation
- Clean Closing Animation
- Also Available on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks- Sentai Filmworks Trailers
“Demon King Daimao” is a series that combines action, a harem anime series (all female characters liking the main male protagonist) and tries to put a twist on Christian beliefs of the concept of demon vs. God. In this case, God is the enemy.
First, lets talk about the good (which may be good for some anime fans). Don’t let the cover fool you, this is not some innocent anime series about ingenue characters, this is a series that tries to combine fan service, nudity and all-out pervertedness with an action-driven storyline. And this will probably be the deciding factor for many anime fans… do you want a lot of fan service or don’t you? Because if you do, then “Demon King Daimao” has plenty of it.
The bad? With only 12-episodes, the anime series introduces quite a bit of characters and with this many characters, you want to see character development. Unfortunately, wiht “Demon King Daimao”, aside from maybe one or two characters, outside of Akuto, there is just not enough episodes to focus on character development.
For a harem series, they tend to benefit from a 24-26 episode series, “Demon King Daimao”only has 12. So, where this anime series does makeup for its story is its action-driven plot and its fan service.
So, what it comes down to is your interest. If you want something deep storyline wise, “Demon King Daimao” is not that type of series. But if you love action and love fan service with occasional nudity then this anime series is for you.
I can easily say that “Demon King Daimao” looks great on Blu-ray, vibrant colors and for the most part, cool animation and there are a few special features.
Overall, this is a type of anime series that will not be for everyone but for action/fan-service anime fans, “Demon King Daimao” will definitely entertain you.
