Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero (a J!-ENT Anime on Blu-ray Disc Review)

January 19, 2014 by

While FUNimation has plenty of anime series that were released in the past two years that feature a plethora of fan-service and series that at least featured a more in-depth, crazy or humorous plot, “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” is an average anime TV series that doesn’t try to be anything more than your typical “booby” anime series rife with fan service.

After saving a fairy-tale kingdom, Akatsuki returns to the real world with his prize: Miu, the busty daughter of the defeated Demon King. It’s one hell of a happy ending until they’re forced to enroll at a school for magic users. There, Akatsuki can’t keep his hands off the girls, Miu’s constantly ballooning measurements make her a walking wardrobe malfunction, and it seems like someone is always plotting against them.

What happens when a man with special abilities (including the ability to remove the bras and panties from women) takes the well-endowed daughter of the Demon King and runs away with her to another dimension?

This is the story of Akatsuki and Miu of “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero”, a light novel series by Tetsuto Uesu that was created back in 2010 and was given a 12-episode anime TV series adaptation produced by ARMS .

The series is directed by Rion Kujo (“Love Doll”, “S-CRY-ed”), series composition by Ryunosuke Kingetsu (“Samurai Girls”, “Tales of Symphonia the Animation”), music by Kayo Konishi and Yukio Kondoo (“Elfen Lied”, “I’s Pure”, “Demon Prince Enma”), character design by Hiroshi Tsukada and art direction by Minoru Maeda (“Dragon Ball Z”, “Dr. Slump”, “Madonna”).

“Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero” revolves around Akatsuki Osawa, the former hero of Alayzard and now a wanted man who has been able to defeat his female rivals by his special fighting techniques but also the ability to remove a woman’s bra and panties with ease.

Having killed the Demon King, his last request for Akatsuki was to look after his daughter Miu.

Akatsuki who was seen as a hero, honors the Demon King’s wishes by taking his daughter Miyu but his role was to kill anything related to the Demon King.

But since Akatsuki is determined to look after her, to protect her, he transports her to another dimension and now those he used to work with from Alayzard want him and Miyu executed.

The two attend the Babel school, as Akatsuki and Miyu pretend to be brother and sister.  But members of the school start to have their suspicions towards the two as they realize that Akatsuki doesn’t have magic power but is able to control the chi of himself and others.  While Miyu is able to generate Shield Magic and can use multiple magical spells.  She also has an issue when she’s overly excited, her breasts tend to get even larger.

Meanwhile, Miyu tries to live a normal teenage life with her friends Kuzuha Domoto (a green haired girl and Class B rep) and lesbian friend, Chikage.

And as Akatsuki and Miyu try to be civil with each other, he sometimes sleep walks to Miyu’s room and begins groping her breasts.  While she sees him as a pervert, the more she stays with him and gets to know him, she eventually starts to have feelings for him.

But as Akatsuki and Miyu try to keep a low profile, because of Akatsuki’s perverted ways, he is being watched under a very close eye by the Student council, especially the Vice President, Haruka Nagase, who Akatsuki has managed to steal her bra and panties a few times.

But what happens when Alayzard sends a spy named Phil Barnett, a holy knight of the Disdian army to infiltrate the school, become friends with Akatsuki but also to execute him and Miyu?

There are anime TV series with bigger productions and sometimes there are those that are just OK and some that look basic.  Fortunately, not many of the latter have been released on Blu-ray in the U.S., but the type of anime series that is in the middle, anime that has a bit of softness, not many location areas or art backgrounds is how “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” is.

While not the best animation, “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” is pretty much a straightforward fan service anime series that captures the anime viewer through its use of big breasts and mature situations.

So, for those who are fan of perverse anime series, will no doubt enjoy “”Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” for its content and may not mind that the picture quality is average.

“Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” is presented in Dolby TrueHD 2.0 in both Japanese and English.  I was a bit surprised that the series didn’t receive a 5.1 soundtrack upgrade considering the amount of action sequences during the entire series but dialogue, music and sound effects are clear.  But it’s a front-channel driven anime series!

Subtitles are in English.

“Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” features the following special features:

  • Audio Commentary Episode 2 – Featuring audio commentary by Alexis Tipton (voice of Haruka), Monica Rial (voice of Kuzuha) and Felecia Angelle (voice of Miu).
  • Audio Commentary Episode 8 – Featuring audio commentary by Joel McDonald (voice of Motoharu), Ryan Reynolds (voice of Chikage) and Eric Vale (voice of Akatsuki).
  • Original Videos – (23:04) Featuring the six animated volumes released with each volume release in Japan.  (Only in Japanese with English subtitles)
  • Promotional Videos –  Original Japanese PV for “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero”.
  • Character Promo Videos – Featuring promo videos for Akatsuki, Haruka and Miu
  • Textless Opening and Ending Songs
  • U.S. Trailer – FUNimation trailer for “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero”.

“Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” comes with both the Blu-ray and DVD version of the series.

For the anime fans who are entertained by the latest rush of mature, fan-service heavy anime TV series “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” may be their cup of tea.

A series known for its action, perverse protagonist and no doubt, a heavy emphasis on large breasts, “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” will no doubt titillate the fans who can’t get enough of these type of series.

The character of Akatsuki is rather interesting, he is very powerful but he also appears to have some skeletons in his closet.  He is a man that can easily remove a woman’s bra and panties within a second and easily preventing them from fighting against them.

And he has this ability to somehow end up in Miyu’s room, via sleepwalking and begin fondling her all over or even showing up while she is showering or changing, as if seeing her nude is not a big thing.

Of course, this is a series to appeal to guys who like to see powerful women, but somehow they grow weak around Akatsuki but try to keep their feelings in check without becoming another banal anime series.

But “Aesthetica of the Rogue Hero” is not a series that is meant to win anime fans over for a deep plot or heavy action sequences, nor awesome animation and background art.  It’s more or less a series created for those who can’t get enough of these type of anime series that put an emphasis on fan service and huge boobs.

The Blu-ray release is OK.  There is a bit of softness but character designs are good, background art are basic walls and doors and truthfully, the main thing that people will be watching is characters and of course, how well-endowed they are.  Lossless audio is only 2.0, so it’s a front-channel driven Blu-ray release.  And if you want even more perverted fan service (yes, even more perverted than the actual series), the Japanese original videos will no doubt make fanboys excited.  You also get two audio commentaries and more!
