To raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rockledge MRI & PET Center teamed up with Breast Friends for The Save Me Surf and Volleyball Event this past Saturday. It turned out to be a beautiful day at the Cocoa Beach Pier. TF Onion set up a vendor where they served fresh pizza, sausage rolls and garlic knots. They also had a beautiful orchid show from Adamson’s Orchids, Organic Angel Girl soaps, and Brevard Professional Network. The Rockledge MRI staff had an extensive amount of information on breast cancer and information on the centers mammograms. New Gravity, playing at Oh Shucks, had people dancing all the way to the shoreline!
The volleyball contest was refereed by a few girls on the Merritt Island High freshmen volleyball team. It came down to a double elimination where the “Motor Boaters” defeated “Breast Check”, not too far behind the “Volley Knockers”. Poor “Motor Boaters” lost a teammate to blisters!
The size of the waves proved that the event was meant to have a surf contest! About 15 surfers battled it out on the waves expression style. There were two 30 minute heats and a 20 minute final heat with the top 3 surfers competing from each heat. GP Floyd took 3rd, Jon Cangianella 2nd, and 13 yr. old Corey Howell took 1st place. The prize was a 4 ft. tiki about the size of Corey!
Raffle prizes were announced towards the end with about 20 people winning prizes ranging from a 2-night stay at the Marriott on Cocoa Beach to a lymphatic decongestive therapy by Karen Walsch to a 7 ft. pink surfboard mirror. For a First annual event, it was a success! Raising over $2,000 to donate to Breast Friends of Florida, Rockledge MRI see’s a 2nd Annual Save Me Event in the future.
