AKB48 wins Grand Prize at the 53rd Nihon Record Taishou

AKB48 has won the Grand Prize at the 53rd Nihon Record Taishou (Japan Record Awards – equivalent to America’s Grammy Awards) on December 30th.

AKB48 is the brainchild of Yasushi Akimoto, the producer of the large female pop group Onyanko Club and the AKB48 franchise. Despite struggling CD sales in Japan, AKB48 has received significant sales over a million in 2011.

Fairies won “Newcomer of the Year”.
