St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who today announced his retirement from the team three days after the team’s World Series win, visits the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, Monday, Oct. 31 (11:35 PM-12:37 AM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
La Russa, who has managed the Cardinals since 1996 and is the third-winningest manager in Major League Baseball history, helped lead the team to their 11th world championship in franchise history with their epic seven-game series against the Texas Rangers, ending with a 6-2 defeat of the Rangers on Friday night. This also marked the third World Series championship in La Russa’s career, with his first in 1989 with the Oakland A’s and later with the Cardinals in 2006. La Russa began his storied baseball career in 1963 as a player for the then-Kansas City Athletics and went on to play for the Oakland A’s, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. He became manager of the Chicago White Sox in 1979 and later the Oakland A’s in 1986, before joining the Cardinals in 1996.
