MICHELLE WIE TAKES FEHERTY TO SCHOOL ON NEXT EPISODE OF “FEHERTY”

March 22, 2012 by

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 22, 2012) – She’s not yet 23, but Michelle Wie has lived one of the most public and highly scrutinized careers in the history of women’s golf. On the next episode of Feherty, Monday at 10 p.m. ET, David Feherty gets a rare visit with Wie to provide Golf Channel viewers with an inside look into the ups and downs of Wie’s life, which has been dominated by driving the little white ball down the fairway.

Wie turned pro just before her 16th birthday, but had been on the national golf scene since she became the youngest ever to qualify for a USGA amateur championship at age 10. Since an early age, she has commanded international attention for her golfing prowess and ability to hit the ball more than 300 yards. She has garnered two LPGA Tour victories so far, and has had seven, top-10 finishes in LPGA major championships. She’s even qualified and played in a men’s PGA TOUR event.

Feherty meets Wie in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University, where she’s making graduation plans. The two discuss her decision to attend college and face critics who thought she should remain focused solely on golf, as well as the shocking transition from a sheltered life with her parents to becoming a “regular” co-ed. Feherty also finds out what dorm life is like for the golf star, checks out a Stanford volleyball match and gets soaked during a little “fountain hopping” (a Stanford tradition) along the way. He also experiences what it’s like to be the Stanford Tree, donning the mascot costume with hilarious results.

The episode reveals the lighthearted side of Wie, rarely seen through television cameras following her in competition.

Feherty, which originally debuted in June 2011 as Golf Channel’s most-watched original series in the network’s 17-year history, has been called a “cross between Oprah Winfrey and Johnny Carson” by The New York Times. Early in its second season, the series has seen Feherty going one-on-one with NBA Hall-of-Famer Bill Russell, “running with the bulls” in Spain with golfing superstar Sergio Garcia, and playing with slightly less than a full deck in Las Vegas with famed golf swing coach Butch Harmon.
