“SOUL SURFER” BETHANY HAMILTON TEACHES THE TRAINERS AND CONTESTANTS HOW TO SURF DURING AN EXCITING TROPICAL GETAWAY TO HAWAII ON NBC’S “THE BIGGEST LOSER”, AIRING TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 8-10 P.M. ET

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – March 14, 2012 – Bethany Hamilton, the surfer and shark attack victim whose inspiring story was made into the feature film “Soul Surfer,” teaches the contestants and trainers how to surf in an action-packed Hawaii episode of “The Biggest Loser” airing Tuesday, March 20 (8-10 p.m. ET).

The eight remaining players – none of whom have ever been to Hawaii — head to the tropical paradise of Oahu for a fun-filled week that will address the excuse “I can’t lose weight on vacation.” There, they meet a young woman who epitomizes this season’s theme of “no excuses” – real-life “Soul Surfer” Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack but was miraculously surfing just a month after the accident. The contestants and trainers are moved and inspired by Hamilton, who encourages them to push fear aside as they all learn to surf, and wind up having the time of their lives.

Then it’s off to a luau, where host Alison Sweeney is waiting with a trivia question challenge that awards the winner a cash prize which can be spent on a menu of items. The temptation to slack off on vacation proves too great for some to resist, despite the trainers’ determination to keep them moving with canoeing, swimming and beach workouts. Later, the players head to the breathtaking Kualoa Ranch where “Jurassic Park” was filmed. The contestants race through a challenge involving tikis and leis for the coveted prize of immunity. Then at Pearl Harbor, with the USS Missouri in the background, the contestants weigh in to reveal whether they were able to lose weight on vacation before another player is sent home.

Born into a family of surfers, Bethany Hamilton jumped on the board at a young age and developed her own passion for the sport. On Halloween morning 2003, she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark, which bit off her left arm and seemed to end her career as a rising surf star. After losing more than 60% of her blood and undergoing several surgeries, Hamilton began her recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude. Miraculously, just one month after the attack, she returned to the water. Just over a year later, she won her first National title. In 2007, Hamilton realized her dream and turned pro. She has since participated in numerous Association of Surfing Professionals and World Tour Events, with her major highlight being a second place finish in the ASP 2009 World Junior Championships. Her story was made into the film “Soul Surfer,” which debuted as a major theatrical release in 2011. Now as a professional surfer, Christian, philanthropist, and healthy lifestyle advocate, Bethany continues to touch and inspire lives globally.

“The Biggest Loser” is a production of Reveille, 25/7 Productions and 3 Ball Productions. Ben Silverman, Dave Broome, JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Todd Lubin and Alex Katz are the executive producers.
