Also on Tonight’s LATE SHOW, New York Knicks Star Amar’e Stoudemire Talks about the Reason Behind His Fashionable On-Court Eyewear

Emmy Award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer, star of the Tony Award-winning musical “La Cage Aux Folles,” reveals plans for his upcoming wedding, and New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudmire on talks about his signature goggles, on LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, Thursday, Jan. 13.

Letterman asked, “Now, I understand, I’m under the impression that your marriage is ending. Is that a fact?” “Yes,” Grammer replied, referring to his impending divorce. “Well, I’m sorry to hear that, or I’m not sorry to hear that?” Letterman asked. “Well, you are respectfully considerate, and yet pleased for the new developments in my life,” Grammer said. “Well, it’s a difficult time, regardless,” Letterman said, “always regardless of circumstances, and especially with kids. Are the kids and everybody all right now?” “The kids seem to be doing okay, yeah,” Grammer said. “We’ve been spending quite a bit of time with them, Kayte and I. Kayte’s my new girl, and we’re planning to get married soon…” “You’re getting married soon?” Letterman asked. “Sometime in February,” Grammer replied.

Also on the LATE SHOW tonight, New York Knicks star power forward Amar’e Stoudemire talked about how a detached retina led him to donning his now signature goggles during play. After getting poked in the eye during contact play at training camp, Stoudemire was told that he had to undergo an emergency procedure to fix the retina, and afterwards, “I had to pretty much lay down on the table for 22 hours a day for 10 straight days in order to reattach the retina.” “Were you worried about your career going forward after that?” Letterman later asked. “Oh, no question, no question,” Stoudemire said. “It was something that was extremely terrifying, didn’t know if I was going to regain my full vision, didn’t know about the future of the NBA or my career, but I was able to persevere.” He also revealed that his vision is now 20/20.

“And you see guys,” Letterman said, “I remember the first one I saw in professional basketball with eye gear was Kareem Abdul Jabbar, wore goggles, and you wear similar protection. Are those the same kind of goggles?” “Yeah, you know, I played with Bo Outlaw back in my rookie year,” Stoudemire said, “and I used to make fun of him all the time, like, ‘Yo, why are you always wearing goggles? Like, they’re not fashionable.’” “Well, there you go, kids,” Letterman joked. “The goggles – not fashionable. If you’re on the line about goggles – no.” “But you know what,” Stoudemire said, “he said he got poked in the eye pretty bad one time and he never wanted to feel that, you know, feeling again, so. And then it happened to me, so I figured since I have to wear them, it’s time to make these goggles fashionable.” The goggles are kept in the clubhouse because, Stoudemire said, “Yeah, you keep them there because you need them every game so you’ve got to keep them protected.” “Yeah, if you’d be fooling around riding in a cab with them or something and leave them in a cab, you’re screwed then, buddy,” Letterman joked. “It’s a bad idea,” Stoudemire laughed.

Both Grammer’s and Stoudemire’s entire interviews, along with a performance by music legend Gregg Allman, can be seen on the LATE SHOW tonight, (11:35 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
