For over a decade, “SpongeBob SquarePants” has become such a tremendous hit for Nickelodeon and an animated series that many children have grown up with. A popular franchise which includes video games, the character featured on a variety of food products, toys, health-related items and more. Needless to say, “SpongeBob SquarePants”, although not a series shown on broadcast television, has managed to become a character that is part of American pop culture and still shows no signs of waning, especially with a new group of young viewers every year.

Created by Stephen Hillenburg in 1999, “SpongeBob SquarePants” is an animated series about a group of characters that live in the underwater city known as “Bikini Bottom”.

The main character of “SpongeBob SquarePants” are:

  • SpongeBob SquarePants - A energetic and naive sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea with his pet snail Gary and works as a cook for The Krusty Krab. He enjoys hanging out with his best friend Patrick.
  • Patrick Star – A pink starfish and the best friend of SpongeBob. Known for his ignorance and stupidity but still a good friend to SpongeBob.

  • Mr. Krabs – The money-loving boss of The Krusty Krab restaurant and boss of SpongeBob and Squidward.

On September 2010, to celebrate the happiest moments  of SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon is releasing a compilation episode DVD titled “SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments”  featuring a total of eleven episodes from 1999-2007 which includes the original first pilot episode “Help Wanted” (1999) and also the Christmas special episode “Christmas Who?” (2000).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments” comes with the following special features:

  • “Help Wanted” – Pilot Episode - The first episode of “SpongeBob SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments” that aired back in May 1999.  In this episode, SpongeBob tries to get a job at the Krusty Krab.

My home is “SpongeBob SquarePants” mania for my seven-year-old. For the past two years, he has been a big fan of the animated series and has wanted everything that the character is featured on, may it be yogurt to toothpaste, he is a SpongeBob maniac and thus, he was excited when I watched this DVD alongside with him. I can’t help but think that if my son is this way, I can imagine how in the last decade, parents had to deal with their children loving this animated series and wanting SpongeBob this and SpongeBob that.  My wife and I have found the “SpongeBob SquarePants”  series to be quite hilarious and fun. Especially when it comes to interacting with your kids, especially with the family singing along with the theme song.

With this latest DVD release, the compilation features episodes from 1999 through 2007 and focuses on the happiest moments of SpongeBob.  May it be visiting his friend Sandy’s home, meeting his TV superheroes Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy, trying to get Squidward to eat a Krabby Patty or trying to get into the Salty Splittoon, you get a total of 10 hilarious episodes (A little over 10 minutes each), a 30-minute Christmas special episode plus the original pilot episode on one DVD.

So, if you have children who love the series, “SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments” is another entertaining volume, especially for those who don’t own the season box sets and are looking for a compilation of older episodes, you can’t go wrong with this DVD.  You get over two hours of fun and entertaining “SpongeBob SquarePants” episodes and definitely a DVD that is great for the kids but also for parents looking for a safe animated series, especially a longer duration DVD of “SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments” for those long trips.

“SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments” is definitely worth checking out!

Nisei Week 2010

nw10p15

The 70th Annual Nisei Week Festival was held in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo on August 14-22.  I’ve been going to this festival for many years.  I think the first time was in 2003.  I’m not sure anymore.  Little Tokyo is home to several festivals throughout the year, but Nisei Week in the largest.  There’s a lot to see over the nine days of this festival.  Last year, I did a lot of coverage of this event.  I was there for a total of four days.  I saw a lot of incredible things.  Although it was fun, I really didn’t feel like doing that this year.  It was an exhausting experience to say the least.  Also, the absence of the Anime Festival this year gave me less motivation to at least be there for the entire first weekend of the festival.

nw10p12

This year, I only attended two days of this festival, which were the two Sundays of the event.  The first Sunday is the most popular day of the festival because of the Grand Parade.  Also returning for this year was the Tanabata Festival.  There were 3 stages in various locations in Little Tokyo providing entertainment throughout the day.  There was a little bit of everything–cultural performances, rock bands, martial arts.  Even with the absence of the Anime Festival, there was still a lot to see and to keep myself busy.  At the tail end of the Grand Parade was the Nebuta Festival, which seems to get bigger every year.  Seeing these lighted floats rolling down the street is certainly and awesome sight.

nw10p21

The second weekend is a lot slower paced.  There’s not as much going on, but there’s still plenty to see.  I chose to attend the final Sunday of the festival with a few friends.  This is closing day of the festival.  Also absent this year was the JSN summer matsuri, usually held on this day at the Weller Court shopping plaza.  On this day, the main events were the Taiko Festival and the Closing Ceremonies and ondo.  We also spent some time looking at the exhibits in the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center.  Honestly, in the many years I’ve been going to Nisei Week, I’ve never really taken a look at what went on inside there.  We found a vendor where you can buy your own set of samurai armor.  We also found various art and clothing exhibits and demonstrations.  We ended the day by participating in the ondo at closing ceremonies.  The dances are fun and easy to learn.  It’s always fun to participate in some aspect of a cultural festival.

This year’s Nisei Week was fun, but it’s alarming to see more events being lost.  The anime festival was not there this year, but will return next year.  The organizer was simply out of town for the weekend.  The JSN summer matsuri was gone for this year.  A few years ago, the street festival and anime festival got consolidated into one event, but that was not a significant decrease.  The Tofu Festival no longer exists.  Nisei Week is getting smaller and that’s not such a good thing.  It’s a great festival.  It’s one of my favorite events of the summer.

The upcoming special will focus on year two of Fashion’s Night Out, including “Fashion’s Night Out: The Show,” the largest public fashion show in New York City history with more than 150 models, at Lincoln Center on Sept. 7, 2010, and the actual Fashion’s Night Out event three days later on Sept. 10, taking place in New York City and more than 100 cities across the country and 17 nations around the globe.  Featured fashion luminaries include Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief; design icons Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch and Tommy Hilfiger; Justin Timberlake, co-founder of William Rast; emerging designers Alexander Wang, and David Neville and Marcus Wainwright from Rag & Bone; and fashion executives Terry Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., and Steven Kolb, executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).  Cameras will follow these celebrities, designers, editors and retailers as they prepare for one of the most anticipated events of the year, providing a unique view of the creative and logistical work that goes into coordinating an event of this scale.

Looking beyond the glamour to the real-life implications at stake, the show will also focus on individuals working in all parts of the industry for whom the vibrancy of the fashion business is a question of economic survival – from Wintour’s initial meetings in Paris with her international editors to discuss plans for this year’s event to interviews with sales managers at the Gap about how Fashion’s Night Out benefits the retail industry.

Now in its second year, Fashion’s Night Out, a worldwide initiative to celebrate fashion and support local economies, was launched in 2009 by Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company and the City of New York in response to the global economic downturn.  In New York City and across the country, participating retailers will stay open until 11:00 PM on Friday, Sept. 10 and offer an array of in-store celebrations, including designer and celebrity appearances, fashion shows and more.  In New York City alone, over 1,000 participants have already signed on to party with a purpose and join in the Fashion’s Night Out event on Sept. 10.

Equally successful on stage and screen, Neil Patrick Harris currently stars as Barney Stinson in the hit CBS television series, “How I Met Your Mother,” a role which garnered him four consecutive Emmy Award nominations and two consecutive Golden Globe nominations.  Harris recently won his first two Emmy Awards for his guest-starring role on “Glee,” in addition to his role as host of the 2009 Tony Awards.  From his film debut opposite Whoopi Goldberg in “Clara’s Heart” and his seminal role as the beloved titular character in “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” to his recent turns in the “Harold & Kumar” films and Joss Whedon’s online sensation, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” Harris has enjoyed a successful career spanning more than 20 years in the industry.  In addition to his numerous film and television credits, Harris has also enjoyed a great deal of success in the theatre.  He most recently made his musical directorial debut with a production of “Rent” at the Hollywood Bowl.  Among his many theatrical credits include roles in the Broadway productions of “Assassins,” “Cabaret,” and “Proof.”  Named to Time Magazine‘s annual Time 100 List in 2010 (a list of the world’s most influential leaders, thinkers, heroes, and artists).  Harris is also set to receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the coming year.
