[OFF-THE-HOOK][YouTube] One more time, One More Chance

June 30, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Since reviewing the Shinkai Makoto film “5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND”, the film has really left a long impression within me. Of course, for many people, there has been that time where one has liked/loved someone but things worked out much differently than expected.

But if anything, may it be a Japanese drama or an anime, there have been only a few instances where a song really makes a deep impact and just tugs in your heart and just realizing how awesome the song is and how it really made the moment of that series or film.

I remember hearing “True Love” and how the song was used in the drama “Asunaro Hakusho” or even “Love Story wa Totsuzen ni” for Tokyo Love Story and most recently “One More Time, One More Chance” by Yamazaki Masayoshi.

Anyway, here are youtube videos for those nostalgic for those series moments.

[BOOK REVIEW] Japanese Monster Survival Guide

June 30, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Japantoday.com Kevin McGue wrote, “Let’s do a quick rundown of your Japan-related bookshelf. “Japanese for Busy People?” Check. “Making Out in Japanese?” Check. “Tokyo for Free?” “Lonely Planet Japan?” Check and check.”

“So you think you have everything you need to survive in Japan, do you? Well, would you know what to do if you were walking down a dark Tokyo alley and encountered a “kuchisake onna,” a machete-wielding woman wearing a surgical mask to hide a deformed mouth stretching from ear to ear? What if a weekend jaunt to the countryside brought you face to face with a “kappa,” a cute but ferocious river goblin known for disemboweling humans? What would you do if a giant and very dirty foot smashed through the ceiling of your apartment while you are watching TV?”

“This new “survival guide” by husband and wife team Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt gives you tips on how to get through such hairy scraps with your life and all your vital organs intact. In case you were wondering, the above encounters, respectively, can be survived by throwing some “bekko ame” (a hard candy), by bowing deeply to the “kappa,” and washing the foot so it will go away.”

“Priestess… I want to see you…”

Once more, the demons’ curse strikes Akane, Priestess of the Dragon God. Each threat that befalls Akane pushes the Eight Guardians to further turmoil…

The fourth volume of “HARUKA ~Beyond the Stream of Time~ A Tale of the Eight Guardians” continues as Akane and others await to find out who are the remaining two guardians.

Just a quick recap of the first three volumes, Motomiya Akane and her friends Morimura Tenma and Nagareyama Shimon were walking home from school. Until a demon named Akram summoned Akane and brought her to their world.

It is revealed that Akane is the Dragon Priestess which Akram wants her to destroy the human world while the Princess wants her to use her powers for good and to find the eight Guardians to save humankind and destroy the demons.

So, the guardians found so far are:

  1. Minamoto no Yorihisa: A samurai who serves the Imperial Court.
  2. Morimura Tenma: Akane’s classmate and friend who has always had feelings for Akane.
  3. Nagareyama Shimon: Akane’s classmate. Has problems associating with others in this new world they are in because blondes and blue eye individuals are demons. So, far really hasn’t fought anyone.
  4. Abe no Yasuaki: A civil servant serving Japan to protect them from evil spirits. Noticeable for his somewhat lack of emotion and his face on the top left area all in gray.
  5. Fujiwara no Takamichi: Works in the government and a nobleman.
  6. Inori: A blacksmith’s apprentice who has a major hatred towards demons and even accuses Shimon of being a demon constantly because of his blonde hair and blue eyes.

So, with six of the Guardians protecting the Dragon Priestess, in volume 4, Akram’s demons start to make their move.

In episode 9 titled “The Eight String Harp (Part 1) – Tune of Enchantment”, an incident occurs at Toji Temple involving a young monk who dies after touching an eight string harp.

We are introduced to Eisen, the half-brother to the Emperor who has become a monk. He plays an instrument to mourn the monk who died and Akane is moved to tears by his music. But all of a sudden the evil harp starts playing from the Toji Temple and the Akane goes into a deep sleep.

We are introduced to another demon named Sefle who is a demon trying to prove his worth to Akram by using the harp and as the Guardians make their way to the temple, they learn from Akram’s aide Icktidarl that the only way to save the Princess is a Guardian must find the eighth string on the harp but a Guardian may have to sacrifice their life and it may or may not wake the Priestess.

In episode 10 titled “The Eight String Harp (Part 2) – Ripples of the Falling Flower”, the seventh Guardian is revealed and only this person can save Akane’s life by possibly sacrificing himself.

In episode 11 titled “The Cursed Priestess”, Tenma’s learns that his kidnapped sister maybe in this world. Also, another girl has called herself the “Priestess of the Dragon God”. Can their be two Dragon Priestesses? Akane and a few guardians search for this girl.

VIDEO:

Video is presented in anamorphic 16:9:LB and presented in 1:71:1 aspect ratio. I watched this DVD twice now on my 52″ inch television and on my 24″ iMac. And as I have mentioned before in my reviews, “HARUKA” has beautiful conceptual art when it comes to the backgrounds and just overall, how the whole land just looks lush. Colors galore! And I also enjoy the character designs. The men of course are quite Bishonen but the overall costumes to the colorful settings of the backgrounds mesh well with each other. Beautiful anime.

AUDIO:

As most of Bandai Visual releases, there is no English dub track and as most Bandai Visual releases, the encoding of audio for their DVD’s are top notch as audio is encoded at 448 kbps and clear audio. As for voice acting, I have been so far, very pleased with the Japanese voice acting for the characters.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The “HARUKA” DVD’s do not really come with many special features. Mainly featured on each volume is bonus footage titled “The Demon’s Soliloquy” which is more or less Akram’s voice and his rendition of the teaser trailers.

And as with each volume, there is a four fold, double paged booklet which features episode synopsis, images, character profiles, staff interview with Hirano Yoshihisa (musician) and a section titled “Anthology of the Eight Guardians – Poems Unraveled” which features the poetry shown at the end of each episode. Also, an illustration by Mizuno Tohko (original manga creator).

“HARUKA ~Beyond the Stream of Time~” continues to be anime series that has not disappointed me at all.

So, far the first four volumes have more or less focused on how the Guardians step up and protect Akane and how we are introduced to new characters, a new Guardian and a new demon that serves Akram.

But after this fourth volume, I expect the eighth Guardian to be revealed and definitely curious how the series will progress afterwards.

All in all, “HARUKA ~Beyond the Stream of Time~” continues to be a beautiful, well-acted and enjoyable series to follow so far and look forward to how it’s leading up to the possible battle between the forces of good and evil. Not sure how it’s going to play out but I look forward to how the series is progressing so far.

A series worth checking out!

+ Beautiful artwork and character designs and continuing Bandai Visual/Honneamise quality for audio and video encoding.

+ Really entertaining storyline so far. I really dig the character development for the series.

+ Really good voice acting from top talent from Japan and easy to ready English subtitles

- Unfortunately no English dub for those that need their anime with that option.

[NINTENDO] WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

June 30, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

June 30, 2008

You want fireworks? Look no further than the Wii™ Shop Channel, where vibrant bursts of classic gaming action and fresh WiiWare™ content will help fill your living room with a flurry of ooohs and ahhhs. Puzzle-game mavens can enjoy a wild new addition to the WiiWare library, while the Virtual Console™ brings a truly classic fighting game to the fore. For an added holiday-week blast, fans of the WiiWare hit FINAL FANTASY® CRYSTAL CHRONICLES®: My Life as a King™ can enhance the action with new Add-On Content.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

WiiWare

Magnetica™ Twist (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The classic puzzle game Magnetica is now available on WiiWare , putting its own unique “twist” on the puzzle-game experience. You’re surrounded by marbles, marching slowly but surely down a track. Use a launcher (piloted by a Mii™ of your choice) to shoot marbles with matching colors and wipe them out before they reach the end of the track. Control couldn’t be simpler, as all you need to do is twist the Wii Remote™ controller to aim and press the A button to shoot. And the game play remains as addictive and deep as you’ve come to expect in Nintendo’s puzzle games, with five varied play modes, advanced mechanics such as the ability to lob marbles, and a never-ending supply of combos. This definitely isn’t your typical game of marbles.

Virtual Console

FATAL FURY 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen-Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1992 by SNK, FATAL FURY 2 is the second installment in the renowned fighting-game series. In addition to Terry, Andy and Joe, who appeared in the original game, another five distinctive fighters gather from around the world to compete for the championship title. Also newly added are stage-specific hazards and the ability to perform desperation attacks when a character’s strength is low. These particularly deadly techniques create the chance for a come-from-behind victory achieved with a single strike. Moreover, the innovative two-line battle, which proved popular in the previous version, also has been radically enhanced. Pressing the weak-attack and strong-attack buttons simultaneously enables players to move their fighters to another line themselves, or to launch an attack that pushes opponents back to another line. This game mechanic, unique to this title in the series, allows the player to take advantage of the depth of the screen and create even more exciting bouts. Can you prove yourself the king of fighters again?

[VIDEO GAMES] Daigasso! Band Brothers DX Song list

June 29, 2008 by · 12 Comments

A few people have asked if I know the songs for Daigasso! Band Brothers DX Song List. I don’t have the new game yet (just the first game and expansion cart). Anyway, the new cart has pre-loaded songs (some that seem to be from the previous game) but you can download 100 of the 700+ songs offered on the linked Nintendo site. According to several sites, you can ONLY download the 100 songs under the terms of agreement.

Bare in mind, I do not know if the numbers stay consistent. The first 101, I took when the site came up. The 102-700+, I took from the site when it first came on. Just to note, I’m sure there are quite a bit of songs on this list from anime. But I didn’t cross reference which anime many of these came from, since most of the songs I am just familiar with the artist(s) that sung them.

Also, some of the songs are repeated on the list. According to other gamers, the list of songs are user submitted. So, that would explain ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION’s “Rewrite” and a few others being on there many times.

The popular Super Robot Wars OG takes to an all-new battlefield!

An encroaching alien menace… And the steel ghost that answers the call of a slumbering power…

It is the era of the so-called New Calendar. A foreign body called Meteorite 3 crash-lands on Aidoneus Island bringing with it the materials and science of what mankind dubs Extra Over Technology. The arrival of this technology is proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life and data recovered from Meteor-3 indicates it is using a form of articulated mobile weaponry. The fate of the earth sphere will be irrevocably altered.

As mentioned on previous review for “Super Robot Wars: Original Generation” the OAV series, I have always been a fan of the video game series, especially the Original Generation Game Boy Advance games that came out in the US.

Of course, the video game series has been out for way over a decade but has never been localized because the games featured on mecha from a variety of different manga and anime licenses.

But fortunately with “Super Robot Wars Original Generation”, it would be the first “Super Robots” related game to not feature licensed characters or mecha and thus, it made things easier for a US release via video games and now with the anime series courtesy of Bandai Visual/Honneamise.

With “Super Robot OG: Divine Wars”, the main story takes place seven years since Meteorite-3 slammed the Earth and the storyline focuses on a teenager named Date Ryusei.

In episode 1 titled “Stage 01: The Steel Ghost”, Ryusei is a big fan of robots and with his mother sick in the hospital, he’s going through growing pains and leaning towards not going to college, so he can work and help pay off his mother’s medical bills.

Accompanying Ryusei is his high-school classmate Mizuha Kusuha. A calm, quiet girl who has her sights set on become a nurse.

Ryusei is focused on pretty much winning the robot fighting video game competitions called “Burning PT” which he has made it to the finals.

Unknown to Ryusei, he is being closely monitored by Ingram Plissken (the commander of SRX Team and the major figure in the SRX Project) and Kobayashi Aya (leader of the team). Both are wondering if Ryusei will display certain fighting talents during his video game match.

Unfortunately, he loses the match and Mizuha tries to console him afterwards. That was until a mysterious object crashes into the stadium and a swarm of bug-shaped robots start attacking.

Mizuha is injured by falling debris and with a big slab of debris. Ryusei needs to get help and out of nowhere, a mass-produced mecha machine known as Gespenst MK-II Type TT happens to show up.

Concerned for his friend, Ryusei jumps into the Gespenst and realizes that the controls are similar to his video game controls. Ryusei then gets into battle to protect his friend from the bug robots known as the Megiloat (alien robots belonging to an extraterrestrial intelligence known as the Aerogaters).

For the second episode “Stage 02: Awakening Power”, the battle between Ryusei and the swarm of bug robots continue and during the battle, Ryusei unleashes an attack that destroys them. For someone who is an amateur, what kind of talents does Ryusei possess?

Ingram Plissken and the SRX Team arrest Ryusei (for stealing their mecha) and offers him a choice. Join the military as a pilot or go to prison (or worse).

The first two episodes of volume 1 primarily focuses on Ryusei Date, if anything, “Super Robot Wars OG: Divine Wars” featured straightforward mecha battles and actually an entertaining storyline that kept me interested.

For those familiar with the OAV series, there are many other pilots that are part of the series, so I’m curious to see how the storyline unfolds in introducing these characters and of the varying teams, how many people will be focused on in terms of the storyline, let alone the storylines that focus on the various industries who are competing to build mecha’s to protect humankind.

VIDEO:

As for the video, since it’s a newer anime series that aired back in the end of 2006 and early 2007, as expected, the anime is clear and colorful. Also, because it is a Bandai Visual release known for their audio and video quality, the anime is presented in 16:9 LB anamorphic with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1.

AUDIO:

Bandai Visual is known for their quality A/V and audio is encoded at 488kbps. There is no Digital 5.1 audio selection, just Dolby Digital Stereo. And primary audio is in Japanese. There is no English dub tracks, for those interested in that.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Surprisingly, there are no special features. I would expected maybe a textless opening or ending, especially for the JAM PROJECT fans out there who enjoy the opening theme. But unfortunately, there are no special features at all.

As for the DVD-insert booklet, there is an 8-page prologue and character guide for the first volume.

If anything, I’m actually very stoked to have a “Super Robots Wars” animated series released in the US. It took forever for the video game series to come out in the US, so I’m enjoying the fact that Bandai Visual/Honneamise has released it in the US.

The negating factors for a lot of people may be that it doesn’t have English dubbing and the fact that the first volume has two episodes (out of nine volumes). Personally, I’ve been watching anime for so long that I could easily remember when I purchased anime LD’s and would get only one episode and paid a premium price for it. But I can understand some people who were hoping for an English dub or more episodes per volume.

All in all, I’m excited about how this series will play out from beginning to the end. For “Super Robot Wars” fans, an animation based on the video game series is a long time coming.

So far, volume one has been entertaining and wished there were special features (like the OAV series) and more episodes but nevertheless, enjoyed it.

I look forward to watching the second volume!

+ “SUPER ROBOT WARS” in an animated television series… A long time coming!

+ Mecha battle fest! Cool animated battles and cool ideas of weapon utilization.

+ Well done voice acting with many of the original voice talent from the video games involved.

- For those who need and prefer an English dub, this DVD is ONLY Japanese with English subtitles.

- Only two episodes on the first volume

Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All (a J!-ENT Book Review)

June 29, 2008 by · 1 Comment

“DHP Publishing/Cocoro Books ‘Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All’ is a pictorial book featuring the beautiful women working the Japanese hostess bar scene. A book definitely for the Japanophile who just can’t get enough of hot, young and sexy Japanese women who one might be able to spend some time with by visiting their hostess club, that is if you have a lot of money and a credit card handy.  The photography is beautiful, titillating and wild!”

BOOK: Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All

AUTHOR: Toyoshima Yoichi

COMPANY: Cocoro Books (DH Publishing, Inc.)

PAGE COUNT: 80 pages

RELEASED ON: March 28, 2008

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

JAPAN’S BAR GIRLS BARE ALL – In the first of its kind, this full-color photo collection brings together some of the prettiest bar girls from across Japan. Known as “hosutesu”, these young women are the flowers of the “water trade”, serving drinks, telling jokes and massaging the egos of their many clients. But who are they really? Here we meet some 50 professionals up close and find out more about what it’s like to be a bar girl in Japan. Contains over 230 full-color photos!

I have seen depictions of Japanese host bars in Japanese dramas many times but it was until my first trip to Japan, during a walk through an area near Kanagawa University, I would see the white Mercedes Benz parked on the sides and right up front, a beautiful Japanese woman urging me to come inside and join her for a few minutes and buy her a drink.

The Japanese hostess, young women who are willing to sit with you, flirt with you, hear your problems out and spend time just being there for you that is if you are willing to pay a lot of money just for a single drink or more and fortunately, I learned from other Japanese friends experiences about these hostess bars and how some people have even gotten into debt and for some guys, even get these mental delusions that they have a girlfriend.

Sure, for those who have knowledge of Japanese culture, there are always stories about how these women make so much money to the gifts that they receive.

Well, Cocoro Books has brought a book to the US titled “Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All” featuring 50 professionals from several clubs in Tokyo, Osaka, Sendai and Hokkaido.

The book features these professionals in poses, lingerie or beauty shots and for those wondering if there is nudity, sorry ecchi fanboys, there are no nude shots.

But still, I actually found the book to be quite intriguing. From the two-page monologue of a hostess bar freak who ventures these kyabakura (hostess bar) and has become so addicted that he has spent 500,000 yen on a girl in a few months and actually mentions how the cost is much more when you add up the bill at the bar plus the nomination fees.

Because in Japan, these hostess go through a “companionship system” and by being a companion, the hostess gains points and as the points accumulate, her pay will increase.

According to the monologue, being the hostess’s companion three times will earn the customer a right to go on a date with the hostess outside of the bar and will be released from the time, money and space restrictions of the hostess bar.

And on his 8th date with a hostess, she never asked for anything but some help with her down payment for a purchase of an apartment.

And I would imagine that many of these beautiful women know how to get into these men’s pocketbooks and thus, this is where the book comes to play.

Outside of the beautiful and sexy photos of each woman (mostly two pages dedicated for each hostess featured), there is a brief interview section which the club the hostess works at, her first name and answering a question of “what is the most expensive present that she has received?”

The answers by some of these women are quite surprising

One answers that she makes $20,000 a month. Another said that someone bought her an apartment resort, another had someone buy her a Lexus, another had someone who bought her a Louis Vuitton bag, BVLGARI watches, Coach handbag, Hermes Birkin (bags that cost $10,000-$100,000).

Of course, those that are “well-known” within the hostess club scene rake in a lot of money but there are women featured who do not receive luxurious gifts.

One woman named Tomoka received a darts machine and another hostess named Azusa who just received a bicycle.

But in the most part, a large number of these women receive expensive gifts or new clothing and I would imagine, probably get what they want.

It’s an interesting contrast to the United States where many young women who do something similar are involved in strip clubs or something that involves possibly daily nudity to a group of men, while these young women Japan focus on men and help build their points and try to keep them as companions in order to increase their pay and even date their customers.

But all-in-all, “Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All” is a straightforward book featuring dozens of women in full-color pages. Very good photography and if anything, the book focuses a large majority of the women who are very beautiful and sexy.  So, for those wondering… no the photographer didn’t just cover your average girl, the women featured are women that look very much like gravure or bikini models but are in fact, employees at hostess clubs.

I would imagine that this book is targeted to those who are familiar with these women or the Japanophile who digs Japanese women (especially knowing that they have the opportunity to be a “companion” by visiting their club.

It’s a very niche book but its another one of those books on Japanese pop culture that I enjoy DHP Publishing/Cocoro Books for what they have managed to bring to the US.

There will always be a demographic of fans who are attracted to these niche books and with “Japan’s Bar Girls Bare All”, it goes beyond just looking at hot, sexy women in lingerie or a mini-skirt, these are women that these individuals might be able to meet and spend some time with (that is if they are willing to pay the money for that time).

Sure, there is no nudity but these women show you another side to them, a sexy and wild side of these women through the beautiful photography and learning what the most expensive gift their “companions” have purchased them is very intriguing.

So, if you definitely are curious about these women and heck, maybe even one day meet them (or date them), no need to import this book from Japan, it’s now being released in the US by Cocoro Books for a very good price, so check it out!

m-flo – TUNNEL VISION (a J!-ENT Music DVD Review)

June 28, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“For a nostalgic ride during the earlier years of the music of m-flo, a motion picture featuring music videos, live concert clips and behind-the-scene videos featuring Lisa, Verbal and Taku. Full of cool, interesting interviews and things that fans may not have known about each individual.”

DVD INFORMATION:

DVD TITLE: m-flo * TUNNEL VISION

DURATION: Approx. 89 minutes

DVD INFORMATION: COLOR/NTSC / English and Japanese audio, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track

CATALOG #: RZBD-45014

COMPANY: Rhythm Zone

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

I really don’t know what song actually attracted me to m-flo immediately but I have to admit that their CD single releases such as “Mirrorball Satellite 2012″, “L.O.T. (Love or Turth)”, “Hands”, “Come Back to Me”, “Quantum Leap” were just CD singles I would listen to a zillion times.

With a lot of the Avex-related DVD’s being re-released at a cheaper price (and no longer in the clam shells but in CD-cases), for the fans of Hamasaki Ayumi, BoA, Otsuka Ai, m-flo and a few others can now enjoy their concerts or music clip collections without breaking the bank.

As for m-flo, back in 2000, with the popularity of the group, a motion picture was created titled “TUNNEL VISION” featuring behind-the-scenes footage and also things you may not know about the people behind m-flo featuring vocalist Lisa, rapper Verbal and MC Taku.

“TUNNEL VISION” is pretty much a video that showcases seven of their music videos from 1998 through 2000 and live footage from their “Planet Shining Tour” featuring seven of their music videos. There are a total of seven live videos. For “Hands”, I found it interesting that only this clip would feature another angle footage which you can watch the projector screen or watch the group perform live. Also, there was a few omake situations where Lisa forgot the lyrics to one of the songs and the fans have a good laugh and she does as well.

Speaking of the fans, similar to their concert videos now, even when they first started, the audience was totally into their music, waving in their hands, crowded and just really enjoying the live concert. That was great to see!

Also, editing was done well for the concert with camera angles close up on each person and a wide stage shot. The full concert performance is shown and not cut off.

I have to admit that the earlier music videos for m-flo were a bit low budget and as much as I loved their songs back then, even back then I wasn’t loving the music videos because they were a bit too basic back then. Eventually things began to get better by their third or fourth music video

But what I enjoyed about this DVD is things that I really didn’t know about the group.

m-flo is derived from mediarite flow (meteorite flow) and all three attended St. Mary’s International School in Tokyo. Verbal is Korean, Lisa is half Columbian-Japanese and Taku is Japanese and the off-shots really show a side of each individual that I never knew about.

For example, with rapper Verbal, included is a skateboarding film he did back in 1988. Apparently, before being a hip hop artist, Verbal (Ryu Yong Gi) was a hardcore skater. The short film featured the young teen doing skateboarding tricks. Also, showing Verbal visiting his favorite record shop “Guiness Records” to purchase vinyls. Verbal studied after high school in Boston.

For Lisa (Elizabeth Sakura Narita), her section featured her talking about her earlier career as a solo artist. In fact, there was a segment where she performed with her band The Vanilla Essence and sang a song. Then she and the band talked about the past and the restaurant where they would perform. Lisa would then show off pictures and posters before she became a member of m-flo.

For MC Taku (Taku Takahashi), his segment featured a look inside his home and his studio. Taku shows off how some songs come together and his hardware. Similar to Verbal, Taku also went to study abroad in Los Angeles after high school.

Also, featured are segments of the group eating teppanyaki and also promotional pieces for their music releases.

There are no special features and the menu features a selection for either the full motion picture, their music videos, live clips or off-shot footage.

The DVD insert features pictures of the trio in concert and production credits.

Granted, this is an older DVD and most people these days who are familiar with the group know of them post-Lisa years.

But I was impressed how much was packed into this overall motion picture. Actually, when I think about their current DVD releases, m-flo DVD’s have been nothing but awesome and you get your money’s worth.

With “TUNNEL VISION”, again older material but if you are a big fan of the group and wanted to see behind-the-scenes footage of them, there is quite a bit material on Lisa, Verbal and Taku and its 89-minutes of m-flo goodness.

If there was one thing that I didn’t like, the track list on the back is not the order of what is being played. It’s just a tracklist broken down as music clips and concert footage featured. So, for those not familiar with their music, when a song comes up, chances are that they will not know what song is being featured.

So, with these re-releases now much cheaper, if you are interested in checking out their older material, definitely check “TUNNEL VISION” out. A good balance of music videos, live concert footage and off-shot material but it’s up to you if you are open to watching the group’s older material.

+ 89-minutes of music videos, concert footage and behind-the-scenes footage of m-flo

+ A good trip through memory lane to remember how m-flo was when they first started

+ Rare side of the life of Lisa, Verbal and Taku shown through the off-shot and Verbal’s skateboarding video also included.

- Fans who are not into their older material may look at this DVD as too old for them to watch. Also, no track listings in terms of what is being shown during full play, just a track listing of music videos and live footage performances.

lecca – Mado no Mukou (a J!-Ent World Groove Album Review)

June 27, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“Reggae artist lecca returns with her second mini-album which focuses more on the dance hall reggae style and upbeat pop groove just in time for her lecca CLUB TOUR.”

ARTIST: lecca

ALBUM: Mado no Mukou

LABEL: Cutting Edge

CATALOG #: CTCR-14553

DURATION: 23:26

RELEASE DATE: February 13, 2008

  1. Kita no Sakaba
  2. UN-SOLO feat. SEEDA
  3. Namida no Hi
  4. Little ms sunshine
  5. Watashi no Rirekisho

Reggae artist lecca released her second mini-album back in Feb. 2008 titled “Mado no Mukou” which features not so much “reggae” in the sense that many people are familiar with.

In fact, this album is much more pop-influenced as the tracks are very dance hall reggae or probably leaning towards more towards the pop end than reggae, especially if comparing this album with recent albums from fellow label artists such as MEGARYU and PANG.

But this style for lecca probably does work well as the music is just right for her CLUB TOUR 2K8 which took
place a month after this mini-album’s release.

The album as a pop album is not bad. The first track “Kita no Sakaba” is an actually awesome dance track and very catchy. lecca demonstrates her ability to sing pop songs but also fuse her reggae style into a pop beat.

But then the next three tracks “UN-SOLO”, “Namida no Hi” and “Little ms sunshine” become more pop-influenced and I suppose that for her club tour, it works out just right. I felt that these tracks were not as strong compared to her last album “Otaku Girls no Utage” which I enjoyed a lot. The first track was great but the next three tracks were average at best.

The final track “Watashi no Rirekisho” is probably the only track on the album that deviates from the pop sound and focuses more on acoustic guitar and percussion and a style that really works well with lecca’s reggae style of vocals.

The CD insert is a quad fold insert with lyrics and production credits on one side and the featuring an image of a clay creation of reggae artists with the speakers and animals.

All in all “Mado no Mukou” was an average album at best. With lecca’s 2007 album “Otaku Girls no Utage” really showing her strengths as an artist, I just wished that “Mado no Mukou” would have shown that similar strenth.

You do have that awesome dance track “Kita no Sakaba” and the acoustic guitar and percussion driven track “Watashi no Rirekisho” that stand out on this min-album but the other three tracks for me, they were just ok.

But nevertheless, I can see these tracks being performed in a club setting and afterall, her 2008 tour is titled “lecca CLUB TOUR 2K8″ but I would like to see more diversity in experimentation with musical styles, more collaborations and an album that really showcases her talent.

“Mado no Mukou” by all means is not a bad album, it’s actually good. Not great…but to me, just average.
