Search for the “treasure” that rests in the Tokyo underground!

A group of children unlock the entrance to the unknown. A new standard for the future of 3D anime!

Fifth-grade student, Ryuhei, discovers a notebook containing the “Tokyo Exploring Records,” a text written by his father. Together with his friends, he forms an exploration team, heading into a manhole to find a world that goes beyond imagination. With a thorough knowledge of the Otomo world, the staff of Steamboy took Katsuhiro Otomo’s short manga and fully demonstrated their ability to make it into a 3D anime. Otomoe even praised the anime saying, “It made me feel lucky to be the original author.”

One of the most beautiful anime that I have seen in a long time!

“SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS: THE NEXT” is based on an original short manga titled “SOS DAITOKYOTANKENTAI” by Otomo Katsuhiro published back in 1980 for now-defunct Manga Shonen.

As the team were preparing to work on “Steamboy 2″, a film that would feature a hybrid visual style that brings together hand-drawn 2D graphics and 3D characters. Unfortunately, due to certain circumstances, plans for the second film was put on hold.

Thus the team of Sunrise Emotion Studio began working on “SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS: THE NEXT”.

When I first watched “SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS: THE NEXT”, I was just blown away by the actual art used by the film and the technology used to create this anime.

The opening scenes of Japan, the paintings were whimsical but yet almost realistic. I was just in awe that I found myself pausing during each scene just to appreciate it.

Upon watching this film, I can’t help but grin and smile.

[Please note: From this point on, there may be a few spoilers. Reader be warned]

The storyline revolves around fifth-grade student Ryuhei who discovers his fathers notebook which contains information of the “Tokyo Exploring Records” which leads him, his little brother and a few friends embarked on a journey ala Tokyo underground to search for some treasure.

The story features the children going underground and discovering a new world.

Sure, this may read a bit farfetched but it’s not for children to do something like this but it’s not.

I actually have done something similar with a group of friends when I was younger. Going through a manhole in an old area of town and we were in eighth grade at the time and relying on hearsay and rumors of what exists down there.

And similar to the world that Ryuhei and friends have discovered in the Tokyo Underground, it’s similar to what we discovered but in a more surreal (and dirty and messy) sense as many homeless were seen living underground.

The situation is no different for this film but the world of those living in the Tokyo Underground is something that is innocent and that makes it a very entertaining children’s story that adults will love (especially if they had a similar adventurous side as a child).

In a way, child adventures have done quite well in capturing that fantasy that a lot of us have felt when we were younger and like a Hollywood adventure classic like “The Goonies”, “SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS: THE NEXT” manages to capture that feeling of adventure, discovery and the excitement that one feels when you are much younger.

Also, for sheer enjoyment, there were just subtle things that caught my attention and also made me smile. From the children using Apple, Dell and Vaio computers to Ryuhei’s father working figurines and Gundam and My-Hime figures in the background. To one of the guys singing “Tomo yo”, a 1960′s Japanese song by Okabayashi Nobuyasu and everyone all singing “When the Saints Go Marching In” in English and much more.

And going back to that visual enjoyment of watching the beautiful scenery and conceptual art backgrounds, I found the images (done through scenery scouting for the film) of the overpass looking down Odakyu Line, to the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and how things were just detailed just was breathtaking.

Even on the human perspective as Ryuhei tends to get bothered by his little brother Sasuke and knocks him in the head and Sasuke cries. Sakuragai Shun, the child who wears the glasses and keeps adjusting them. Capturing those moments to give a sense of realism to the animated film is something that I truly enjoy.

The animation is presented in 16:9 LB. The animation is vibrant, colorful and what Sunrise Emotion Studio was able to accomplish through toon shading and finding a way to capture hand-drawn animation via 3D. What an awesome attempt that I can see them refining in future animations. Bravo!

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1ch and Dolby Digital Stereo. Definitely some scenes when the action comes alive, that the sound is well done. The acting is well done and the subtitles were nice, crisp and easy to read. There is no English dub for this anime but considering Bandai Visual trying to help stop piracy by shortening the windows of anime DVD releases from when it was released in Japan and a few weeks later releasing it in the US. I’m happy to see Bandai Visual going this direction.

As for special features, this is where Bandai Visual DVD’s rock!

The special features on this DVD comes with a “Making Of” that really goes into the behind-the-scenes of creating this anime and interviewing people on staff (not just the director and screenplay writer but actual members of the staff involved in the creation of the anime) was a great addition!

Special features included creator interviews, the trailer and even commentary (which is English subtitled) with Director Takagi Shinji, CGI Director Kokubo Masashi and Chief Animator, Nakajima Tomonari. This addition of a subtitled commentary from the Japanese staff is just awesome!

And similar to the “Gunbuster” DVD releases from Bandai Visual, “SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS” also includes a detailed and informative 12-page booklet with an introduction, the transition from manga to anime, character information, “Did You Know?” section that goes into the scenes that I enjoyed watching over and over and featuring some notes on those scenes.

Also featured is “The Making of SOS! The Next” and with an interview with Takagi, Ohara and Otomo.

All in all, this film is just visually impressive. It’s not an action or mecha film, it’s a film about children going on an adventure to look for treasure underground.

For me, I can’t help but appreciate this film in many levels, mainly because the kids going out and going underground is an experience that I also had done as a child.

But what I found more touching is how the original manga by Otomo and the current animated film, finally are bridged together to know how the new relates to the old and I found it extremely touching.

Again, Bandai Visual manages to give the anime fan so much more with its inclusion of in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes look at how the animation was created. And the inclusion of the informative booklet for this film, again, a nice touch!

All in all, “SOS! TOKYO METRO EXPLORERS: THE NEXT” is a film that will appeal to animation fans who appreciate great art, great storytelling and the awesome effort by the Sunrise Emotion Studio in creating this beautiful animated film.

Overall, this DVD is a winner!

PLUS:

+ Awesome animation and overall art! Innocent storyline!

+ DVD features commentary (English subtitled), informative special features and a cool 12-page booklet.

+ Knowing the effort of the team bringing 2D and 3D together and watching it visually work!

+ Bandai Visual shortening the window of Japanese and American DVD releases.

+ Well acted and crisp, clean and readable subtitles.

NEGATIVES:

- No negatives… But if I had to be finicky, the fact that there is no English dubbed version for the fans who really want that, can be seen as a negative.

OVERALL SCORE: A

reign over me (a J!-ENT DVD Review)

MOVIE COMPANY: SONY PICTURES
CAST: Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle, Jada Pinkett Smith
, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland
DIRECTED & WRITTEN BY: Mike Binder
RATING: Rated R
INTERNET MOVIE DATABASE URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0490204/
TYPE OF MOVIE: Drama
DURATION: 124 minutes

Adam Sandler Don Cheadle Jada Pinkett Smith and Liv Tyler star in this heart-rending story about Charlie Fineman (Sandler) who has slipped away from reality after the sudden loss of his wife and children. But Charlie s life takes a turn for the better when he runs into his old college roommate Alan Johnson (Cheadle) whose life is torn between the demands of career and family. Their renewed friendship rekindles their long-forgotten bond and both men emerge enriched and enlightened.

DVD EXTRAS:

  • Behind the reign: the making of reign over me
  • Extended jam session with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle
  • A still reign: photographic montage.

DVD REVIEW:

An emotional and power film about a physician named Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) who runs into his college roommate, Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), who has changed for the worse since Sept. 11.

Alan feels the need to help his friend who seems to be emotionally unstable and all he does is play video games, redoes the kitchen over and over and plays music.  Literally unemployed and has isolated himself from everyone.

As for Alan, he owns his own medical practice but his fellow physicians tend to keep him out of the circle and because of work and obligations to family, hasn’t really enjoyed his life.

That is until he meets Charlie and wants to connect with him and to see why he has become the way he is and possibly rekindle the friendship.

I have to admit that I was not sure about the film.  Don Cheadle is a fine actor but to have Adam Sandler play a serious role, after watching all his comedy films, wasn’t sure where this one would be going.  But amazingly, Sandler does a good job playing Charlie Fineman, who is reminscent of Dustin Hoffmany’s character of Raymond Babbitt of “Rain Man” but with much more paranoia, depression and anger.  But more strongly, his guilt over the loss of his wife and daughter that constantly replays in his mind over and over again.

Charlie is literally paranoid that Alan is spying on him and it comes to the point where Charlie almost becomes an annoyance to Alan and his family because he keeps showing up and wanting to do things that Alan is not used to doing.  Even in one scene where Charlie just loses it and destroys Alan’s waiting room.

But what I found most touching about the film is that there are many documentaries but not many films that deal with the families or love ones left behind after their significant other or family was killed on Sept. 11th.

Once Charlie finally opens up to Alan about the feelings he has kept suppressed within himself, you can’t just help but cry and know that probably in reality, there are many more people like him who are unable to let go or not ready to talk about their emotions.

Jada Pinkett Smith who plays Janeane Johnson plays a concerned wife of Alan.  Especially when he is spending all nighters playing videogames or doing something and not coming home.  And it definitely leads to a breaking point between Alan and Janeane where Alan, who also has emotions bottled up inside, has to let his emotions out.

Liv Tyler plays the character of Angela Oakhurst, a psychiatrist and friend of Alan who tries to help Charlie with his emotions.

The DVD comes with a few special features that include the two having to learn to play instruments and a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the film.  Also, included is a photo montage.

I think Binder & staff did a good job in covering the New York landscape in their scouting locations.  Not showing too many things that are happy but keeping within the confines of the overall atmosphere of the movie.

As for the overall film, it’s touching, very emotional but it’s far from perfect.  We understand Charlie and why he is so emotional but for Alan’s character, he’s a doctor with a beautiful wife and good family, obviously making good money… but is his dilemma overwork?  Not satisfied about his life or his working partners?

Also, the things that Charlie does to Alan and how Alan just remains patient with him and forgives for everything, no matter how bad the situation maybe, definitely Alan has a good heart but how many people would be friends with a man who destroys your place of work or tries to pick a fight with you?

But nevertheless, despite its minimal problems, the movie comes together quite fine and in the end, I felt entertained, quite touched by the overall message in the film of how life so fragile.  All in all, a DVD worth checking out!

[Wii] BUCKLE UP! MARIO KART WII PUTS EVERYONE IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

New Wii Wheel Brings Motion Controls to Nintendo’s Racing Franchise

REDMOND, Wash., April 28, 2008 – Since the invention of the automobile, kids have pantomimed driving with pretend steering wheels. Since the dawn of the video game age, people of all ages playing racing games have twisted and turned their controllers to steer their vehicles, even though it had no effect on the action on the screen. Now, Mario Kart® Wii makes these fantasies a reality and brings a new level of immersion and interaction to video games.

The raucous driving game, which launched Sunday, comes packaged with the Wii Wheel™ steering wheel accessory that houses the Wii Remote™ controller and lets players steer just as though they were driving a real car. The accessory has been specifically designed and engineered so that even someone who has never played a video game before can pick up the Wii Wheel and start racing instantly.

“Just like Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii will have everyone in the household playing together, laughing and having fun,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “With the Wii Wheel and ability to race with Mii caricatures, Mario Kart Wii literally puts players directly into the game.”

While newcomers will find it easy to hop into a race, Mario Kart Wii holds plenty of challenges to keep veterans busy. Mario Kart Wii features 16 new tracks, as well as 16 retro tracks from previous Mario Kart games. Dozens of characters from the Mushroom Kingdom are present, and each has his or her own collection of customized vehicles to race.

For the first time in the Mario Kart series, racers can compete on either motorbikes or karts as they find shortcuts, grab power-ups and take down other racers in a frantic free-for-all. In addition to the Wii Wheel, players can also choose from three other control configurations, such as the Nunchuk™ and Wii Remote controllers, Nintendo GameCube™ controller or the Classic Controller™, so everyone will find a suitable setup.

Four people can compete on a single Wii™ system, or up to 12 people near or far can race via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo’s online gaming service. A new Mario Kart Channel on the Wii Menu lets players compete in tournaments, check rankings, see when their friends are playing and download ghost data.

[MANGA] Tezuka Osamu’s “Dororo” review

April 24, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

In a recent manga review by Tom Baker, Baker reviews the Tezuka Osamu manga “Dororo”.

Baker wrote, “Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989), nicknamed the “god of manga,” is best known for creating the classic characters Astroboy (a cute robot) and Black Jack (an underground surgeon) and for his multivolume manga interpretation of the life of Buddha. But his oeuvre is vast, and manga fans who do not read Japanese are fortunate in that more and more of it is becoming available in English.”

“On April 29, Tezuka’s wandering adventurer characters Hyakkimaru and Dororo will make their English-language debut when the first volume of Dororo is released by Vertical, Inc. The remaining two volumes are due out later this year.”

“The premise is a standard quest setup, in which a character goes on a long journey, overcoming one obstacle or opponent after another in pursuit of some larger distant goal. In this case, Hyakkimaru’s goal is to get his body back, as his father–a power-mad samurai in feudal Japan–sold pieces of his then unborn son to 48 demons in exchange for political and military success. Hyakkimaru is 14 years old for most of Volume 1, in which he reluctantly acquires a younger, orphaned, Artful Dodger-like sidekick, Dororo.”

Gunbuster 2 Vol. 3 (OAV episodes 5 & 6) (a J!-ENT Anime DVD Review)

April 22, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

“For fans of the original “Gunbuster” series, will not want to miss any minute of the final DVD volume of “Gunbuster 2″. Not only is the animation fluid and beautiful during the battle sequences but an ending so fitting, original “Gunbuster” fans will feel complete with the overall storyline of “Gunbuster 2″.

ANIME SERIES: GUNBUSTER 2 Vol. 3

RELEASED BY: Bandai Visual (HONNEAMISE)

CATALOG#: BUDH0107

DVD INFORMATION: 62 minutes, 16:9 LB, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0, English Subtitles

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

The real enemy, the Fluctuating Gravity Well, closes in on mankind! What will be the fate of the Sol System?!

Finally, Nono’s true self has been revealed. Sine the shocking Titan incident, the Topless have been placed under house arrest in the remotest part of the Sol System, their abilities sealed up. With their very existence denied, Lal’C and the other pilots are now at the mercy of fate.

But another catastrophe is closing in on the Sol System…. The time has come to launch the strongest fleet in the Space Force – and the Buster Machine #7!

What an amazing conclusion to the “Gunbuster 2″ OAV series.

Without spoiling too much, I can’t explain how happy I was to see how the sequel ended. It was a feeling of happiness because it was a major way of bridging both the original series and “Gunbuster 2″ together.

Episode 5 titled “Mover of Planets” takes place after the incident on Titan. With the way episode 4 ended in tragedy and also revealing what Nono really is, the episode starts off with the military no longer looking at the Topless as being their protectors against the Space Monsters.

Because of the way things ended so badly for the pilots, Nono has become the new defender of the Planet Earth to take on the Space Monsters. Is Nono ready and what about Lal’C and the other Topless now that they have been quarantined and deemed ineffective.

Episode 6 titled “The Story of Your Life” is simply a beautiful story that features Lal’C learning more about Nono’s life. Nono has disappeared and Lal’C has now become the hero to defend and destroy the Planet Earth. As we learned from the original “Gunbuster” of how destroying a planet was needed as resources to create Buster Machine #3 with the Planet Jupiter, this time, the Planet Earth is being sacrificed.

As for the DVD, the animation is just top-notch as the the battle against the Space Monsters continue and a lot of action scenes plus great sound via Digital 5.1 with sound being heard really well on the rears and overall, production value was definitely well done. Similar to past releases, there is no English dub. The Japanese voice acting is well done on this series.

In terms of special features, unfortunately there is no “DIEBUSTER TV” on this volume but there is the theatrical trailer for the “Gunbuster vs. Diebuster” film.

But included is the informative 20-page booklet featuring character profiles, Buster Machine and Space Monster profiles, interview with Yamazaki Takumi (Voice of Casio), interview with Sadamoto Yoshiyuki (Character Designer), Izuna Yoshitsune (Buster Machine Director), Okama (Future Visual Creator) and a very cool, informative interview with Tsurumaki Kazuya (Original Planner/Director) and Enokido Yoji (Screen Writer).

It’s very hard to review too much of this volume without spoiling it, so I’ll leave this as is.

I know that there are people who may have only seen the first episode or two of “Gunbuster 2″ but all I can say is watch it from beginning to the end, you won’t be disappointed. If you are a fan of the original “Gunbuster”, I can’t say how important it is to watch “Gunbuster 2″ and see how it ties into the original.

As for the DVD, I found the beauty of “Gunbuster 2″, you do get an appreciation for the series through the 20-page booklet included. Especially the interview with Tsurumaki and Enokido who discuss the finale episode

All in all, a beautiful anime and the way the series ends, you can’t help but be appreciative of the work the staff put into this series but most importantly, that the people behind the series, they understood how to make sure they stay faithful to the original anime series. Very awesome ending!

“Gunbuster 2″, this volume and the other two are just awesome. Sure, I do enjoy the original series much more because there was a big focus on character development and Noriko’s willingness to work hard and strive to be the best.

Highly recommended!

PLUS:

+ Two awesome OAV episodes full of action

+ Ending sure to satisfy fans of the original “Gunbuster” series

+ Wonderfully voice acted. Beautiful animation! And well planned storyline from beginning to end.

+ The 20-Page Booklet DVD insert was another awesome inclusion to really appreciate the anime.

NEGATIVES:

- No English dub for those who need that

- No DIEBUSTER TV on this volume similar two the two previous volumes. Just one special feature – the movie trailer
