[MANGA] Manga review “Real”

January 31, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

In a recent manga review for the Daily Yomiuri, Inoue Takehiko reviews the manga “Real”.

Inoue wrote, “Turning to the last page of Vol. 7 of Real, I found myself saddened and disappointed. Takehiko Inoue, the artist and writer behind this manga, seemed at first to be cashing in on his hugely successful Slam Dunk series, which was about a basketball team, by having Real be about a wheelchair basketball team. Sensing a retread, I had opened Vol. 1 of Real with lowered expectations.”

“Boy, was I wrong. And so was the publishing company for promoting this as a sports manga.”

“Yes, the story (which has sold 9 million copies so far) centers on the Tokyo Tigers, a wheelchair basketball team struggling to become the top of its division. Despite this being the setting, though, the story is much more of a so-called human drama in which the characters deal with their disabilities, be they physical, mental or–in the case of character Nobuhisa Takahashi–personality-based.”

“The award-winning story bounces between three main characters: Kiyoharu Togawa, a wheelchair-bound 19-year-old who is a talented and passionate–some would say too passionate–basketball player; Tomomi “Kobe Bryant” Nomiya, a high school dropout who starts the series off by attacking Takahashi; and Takahashi, an arrogant high school superstar who excels at sports, grades and girls.”

  1. LAST ANGEL – Koda Kumi feat. Tohoshinki (Music Video)
  2. LAST ANGEL – Koda Kumi feat. Tohoshinki (MAKING VIDEO)

wg-review.jpg

I’ve had Koda Kumi’s 38th CD single for quite some time, just listening to it over and over because it features a very cool collaboration with Korean pop quintet Tohoshinki (who sing both K-Pop and J-Pop).

Both Koda Kumi and Tohoshinki are known for their pop songs but also known for their awesome dance choreography. So, I had very big expectations for this CD single and especially their music video because I expected some awesome dance moves featured for “LAST ANGEL”.

The latest CD single features an image song used for the “Biohazard” (Resident Evil 3) film in Japan and actually, a little surprised because for Biohazard’s dark theme, I’d imagine more of a rock type of theme but nevertheless, “LAST ANGEL” is what was used.

The song starts out with “Welcome to nightmare world tonight”. Sounds threatening and dark but its anything but. The song is about overcoming the darkness, overcoming pain together with someone. The song is a synth-based pop song with a pretty cool beat and the string arrangement (ala synth) which was a very nice touch to the overall song.

The coupling track “Dear Family” features a slow ballad and features more of an R&B-inspired track with the deep bass groove. Almost like an old school R&B touch courtesy of Matsuawa “T.O.M” Tomokazu.

The lyrics for both songs were written by Koda Kumi (the first feat. a writing collaboration with H.U.B.).

The DVD features both Koda Kumi and Tohoshinki with a very cool setup for the overall video and as expected featuring great choreography. The music video has an arctic, futuristic look to it and everyone sporting white, silver and gray during their collaboration scenes was very cool and stylish.

The “making of” features behind-the-scenes of the dancing scenes between Koda and Tohoshinki, her solo scenes and also interviews. The guys were very stoked to work with her and a lot of enthusiasm during the filming.

The CD insert is actually a fold out poster. One one side is Koda Kumi sitting on a speaker with her legs on a wall. The other side features the lyrics to the two songs and CD and DVD credits.

wg-judgementcall.jpg

Just the collaboration between J-Pop diva Koda Kumi and Tohoshinki is just awesome because the two have awesome pop music and also awesome choreography and to see these two gel together, everything worked very well and the CD single together.

A lot of reviews and I guess it depends who the listener is biased towards will say that Tohoshinki’s vocals overpowered Koda’s vocals and vice-versa for Koda overpowering the guys. Personally, I felt that there was a good balance between Koda and Tohoshinki and watching the music video, it’s good to see each guy of Tohoshinki get some face time evenly.

All in all, the music for both tracks is very well done, catchy and listened to it many times already and I really dig it! A very awesome collaboration and worth owning for Koda Kumi and Tohoshinki fans. The coupling track “Dear Family” had a nice old school R&B touch which is why I really dug it.

Both Koda Kumi and Tohoshinki fans should enjoy the CD single and “LAST ANGEL” would definitely make a good fit in a fan’s music collection.

  13. DREAMLAND

wg-review.jpg

lecca (pronounced as “Rekka”, name is lowercased) is a well-known reggae MC on the Cutting Edge record label. Her music is a combination of reggae dance hall and pop R&B.

A graduate at Waseda University as a political economics major, the singer pursued her dreams of becoming a music artist by performing at several venues before enrolling in a performing arts school focusing on vocal and dance where she lived in Toronto and New York.

Returning back to Japan, lecca changed her musical style and focusing on Japanese R&B and has produced and collaborated with fellow label reggae MC’s PANG, MEGARYU and many other artists.

Since signing with Cutting Edge, lecca has released one mini album titled “DREAMER” (26/04/2006) and two full length albums, the first being “URBAN PIRATES” (CTCR-14492) released in August 2006 and her second full-length album “Otaku girls no Utage” (which translates to Otaku girls Spree). She also has an Indie album released back in 2005.

Her second full-length album showcases lecca’s talent in which all tracks lyrics and music are by her and also contributes track arrangements for “Payday”, “Yonde My Name”, “Chouchou” and “DREAMLAND”.

The album features a good balance between reggae dance hall and lecca’s quick delivery of lyrics from lecca and absolutely showcasing her vocals. With other female reggae artists, such as PANG who tends to focus more on the mellow reggae melody, lecca will take on tracks that border near contemporary dance reggae.

The first track “Outsider” is one such track which the lyrics are fast and furious and the delivery and vocals of lecca are showcased.

The second track “Start Line” is another track that has an addictive melody and showcases lecca’s style of vocal delivery, cool pop beats and definitely infectious.

The third track “a~i!” features lecca showcasing her quick delivery of lyrics and a more reggae music style than the previous two tracks which are more pop-inspired. The song features Hirohisa from Stoned Rockers on bass.

The fourth track “Payday!” is another track that is more Japanese reggae and features lyrics, music and arrangement by lecca.

The fifth track “F.A.F” is another track with a more pronounced reggae sound and groove. The song features musicians PJ, Rui, Ras Kanto and Aki from Dubsensemania.

The sixth track “Yonde My Name” sounds similar to another pop song (Rihanna anyone?) but another track that features lecca’s lyrical and musical style and arrangement with DawnTown (who also worked with lecca on the first two dance hall tracks).

The seventh track “Home party” features a very addictive dance track by lecca and TSUGUMI from SOULHEAD. Both collaborated on the lyrics and the music with track arrangement by lecca and HASE-T.

The title track for the album is the eighth track and features a collaboration with Nao’ymt for the arrangement. Another track showing the ferocity of her quick delivery which just features a barrage of lyrics and bass drum.

The ninth track “Chouchou” is a very cool ballad featuring a solo keyboard and bass drum for the music and lecca singing. Very cool and a track which the lyrics, music and arrangement were completely all by lecca.

The tenth track “Poka~n” features a collaboration with HAKASE-SUN for arrangement, MPC 3000 programming and MOOG bass. Also, NODATIN (of WADADA) on electric guitar. The song features a reggae groove and like the Steel Pan and Tabla by Yamamura Seiichi giving a nice Jamaican twist to the song.

The eleventh track “I wish” is another track featuring another collaboration with HAKASE-SUN who also lends his musical talent with acoustic piano and wind chimes to the track. Also, NODATIN on electric guitar and acoustic guitar for another reggae influenced track.

The twelve track “Goddess in the Mountain” features arrangement by Nao’ymt and lyrics and music by lecca and features a more pop-bassed but a reggae groove.

The final track “DREAMLAND” features a track with music, lyrics and arrangement by lecca and a deep reggae bass groove and also featuring children on chorus.

The CD insert features the lyrics in the booklet and a few photos of lecca.

wg-judgementcall.jpg

Japanese reggae music is something I have enjoyed for the longest time and I really enjoy what artist NAHKI, MEGARYU, RYO the SKYWALKER, PANG, Pushim and lecca have done to get Japanese reggae to the mainstream.

lecca’s latest album is another awesome effort by her in showcasing her style of reggae music featuring dance hall reggae and also incorporating her R&B pop influence into the tracks on “Otaku girls no Utage”.

It’s another solid album featuring tracks that are catchy, addictive and enjoyable and also something fresh and new for everyone who is curious about Japanese reggae.

Definitely worth checking out!

[MANGA] Manga review “One Piece”

January 24, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

In the latest manga review for Daily Yomiuri, Matsumaru Kumi reviews “One Piece”.

Matsumaru wrote, “Powerful, agile movements and lots of onomatopoeic and imitative words, both of which often are drawn extending beyond their manga frames, must be one of the charms of the pirate-action comic One Piece.”

“Although I myself was a little bit overwhelmed and exhausted by the continuous pages of these “pop-up” depictions, they must partly explain why One Piece–the 48th volume of which was released in Japanese last month–is one of today’s best-selling manga.”

“As of Volume 46, the series had sold more than 140 million copies. Volume 27 by itself holds a manga sales record in Japan, with 2.63 million copies sold in its first printing alone.”

“Meanwhile, 16 volumes so far have been released in English by Viz Media LLC. One Piece, Vol. 17: Hiruluk’s Cherry Blossoms is due in March.”

[WORLD GROOVE] Currently listening to MAY – KIZUNA

wg-review.jpg

In December 2007, avex io music artist MAY released her 7th CD single “KIZUNA”.

Among one of the few Korean’s on an Avex related CD single, MAY’s musical style is inspired by her favorites such as JEWEL and THE CORRS.

In 2007, MAY has literally been back and forth promoting her Korean and Japanese musical works but I really enjoy this artist’s music. Typically photographed along with her acoustic guitar in Japan, “KIZUNA” features a mellow rock song that highlights MAY’s high voice (along similar artists such as YUKI of JUDY AND MARY and CHARA) and her guitar playing.

Listening to her seventh CD single though, it kind of invokes similarities to various artists in Asia. Which is not a bad thing, mainly because for example, “KIZUNA” means “friendship” and the song actually reminds me of the “peace” songs that come from the Philippines or even J-Friends (a special group which combines Johnny’s Jimusho groups and artists to benefit a charity). The song is very peaceful and features the child choir singing in the background. It’s a friend family friendly song and no surprise as its used for the children’s animated film “Nezumi Monogatari” from Sanrio.

As for the coupling track “Toki wo tomete”, the song is a ballad that at first starts out sound like the Carpenters “Sing” and starts out with just a piano and then slowly includes the drums and then later, other instruments. The song is beautifully done and enjoyed her vocals on this track.

The CD insert features a bi-fold with lyrics inside and not much else.

wg-judgementcall.jpg

I enjoy MAY’s music and so far, I haven’t been disappointed with her release. She has great music but among the other Korean artists from Avex, typically they are promoted as R&B artists with a strong dance background.

MAY is a musician that can sing and whether it be in Japan or Korea, she doesn’t get the push as someone like BoA or Tohoshinki.

Her seventh CD single “KIZUNA” was used for a children’s film and the song has that strong quality with the children’s choir in the background of being a family friendly song. The coupling song “Toki wo Tomete” is a beautiful ballad and another CD single that I have enjoyed from the artist but know that somehow her music gets lost within the shuffle of other releases.

She has a beautiful voice (which might be a little to high for some) but so far, I’ve really enjoyed her musical work and I think others would as well.

Nevertheless, for those who want to hear good music, an artist who works her ass off to promote her name, please give MAY a try.

DVD: Region 2, 4:3, Duration: 4 minutes

  1. Yukiboshi (Music Video)

wg-review.jpg

Former gravure idol and former member of musical group WI*TH, Takasugi Satomi released her third CD single titled “Yukiboshi/Soshite Boku wa Toho ni Kureru” back in December 2007.

With a new album “garden” and fourth CD single “Issho ni” scheduled for a simulatenous released on February 20th, Takasugi has definitely been busy.

With the first track “Yukiboshi”, the song features a nice mellow rock song balanced with strings. To tell you the truth, the song had a reminiscent feeling of old school My Little Lover with the use of the strings which added a nice touch to the overall song.

The second track “Soshite Boku wa Tohono ni Kureru” was a song that was supposed to be the singer’s initial debut release song but was held back and used as the double A-side for her third CD single.

The song is cover of a classic originally by Osawa Yoshiyuki and Takasugi’s version is a bit slower tempo wise. Nevertheless, for those who don’t remember or have heard the original version will probably like Takasugi’s version.

The last two tracks are the instrumental versions of both songs.

As for the DVD, the DVD features the music video for “Yukiboshi” and features Takasugi singing with CG flowers, trees, clouds and rose petals all over the place and then transcends to Takasugi inside a home, singing until the CG flowers start popping up throughout the house and Takasugi wandering through the house to see where the flowers lead to.

The CG are the kind that you typically see on G4TV or HGTV, so I guess you can say, the CG is something that is kind of overused and to tell you the truth, really doesn’t make too much sense when compared to the songs lyrics.

As for the CD insert, it is a tri-fold which features the lyrics. The other side features two photos of Takasugi and song and music video credits.

wg-judgementcall.jpg

All in all, Takasugi has a very beautiful voice and for this CD single, I actually enjoyed both songs.

I see a lot of potential in her music but at the same time, with so many female artists in Japan, unfortunately Takasugi’s music can get lost in the shuffle of releases. Fortunately, she has her fans that followed her when she was a gravure model, a member of WI*TH and those who believe in her potential.

I really enjoyed her song “Tabibito” from the “Saiyuki Original Soundtrack” and also enjoyed her song “Hyaku Renka” but I feel that there needs to be some unique marketing with her.

All in all, her third CD single “Yukiboshi/Shoshite Boku wa Toho ni Kureru” is an enjoyable and relaxing CD single and look foward to her upcoming CD single and album.
